Founded in 1755, Vacheron Constantin has long championed the artistic crafts known as métiers d’art, weaving guilloché, enamelling, engraving and gem-setting into its horological identity. This tradition owes much to 16th-century Geneva, when John Calvin’s austere doctrines forbade jewellery and ornamentation. This compelled artisans to redirect their creative talents towards watches. Timepieces became discreet canvases for artistic expression.
Though Calvinism’s grip has long since loosened, the appetite for such refined artistry endures. By the early 19th century, Vacheron Constantin had begun producing exquisitely decorated pocket, pendant and brooch watches, adorned with enamelled florals, pearls and semi-precious stones – testaments to an enduring decorative lineage. These métiers d’art practices are still showcased in some of Vacheron Constantin’s modern timepieces today, including the new Overseas Self-Winding High Jewellery – a timepiece that effectively blurs the boundaries between formal and informal timekeeping.

The Overseas became the spiritual heir to Vacheron Constantin’s inaugural 222 model – the brand’s 1970s luxury sports watch designed by Jorg Hysek (not Genta, as many would be forgiven for thinking). Though short-lived, the 222 proved enduring and was named in honour of the maison’s 222nd anniversary. It was discontinued in the mid-80s, though the brand pledged to preserve its most beloved characteristics with the launch of the inaugural Overseas collection in 1996.
From the start, the Overseas watch combined a round dial and bezel with a tonneau-shaped case, a crenellated bezel and a satin-finished bracelet accented with polished details. Initially presented in a 37 mm case, the collection soon expanded to include 35 mm and 24 mm variants. The original model was a three-hand watch with date, available in stainless steel or gold, while the chronograph followed in 1999. A significant redesign arrived in 2004, with the chronograph growing to 42.5 mm, though the core design language remained unmistakably intact. Today, the Overseas is in its third generation, offering a range of unisex designs, case sizes and complications, along with a refined interchangeable strap system.
Displaying the time and date, the Overseas Self-Winding High Jewellery embraces the dressier, cleaner aesthetic introduced with Vacheron Constantin’s 2016 updates, while adopting the more compact 35 mm proportions unveiled in 2023. The tolerances are measured in fractions of a millimetre, ensuring every stone sits perfectly flush, with no gaps and no visible metal.

The bezel sits atop a circular brushed plinth, round in shape and mounted upon the polished case middle. Here, Vacheron Constantin’s artisans apply another highly demanding technique known as snow setting. This intricate method covers the lugs and the full surface of the 18K white or pink gold bracelet, incorporating a total of 884 brilliant-cut diamonds (6.95 ct) in varying sizes, arranged to create the illusion of a random pattern. In truth, every diamond is carefully and methodically set to eliminate gaps and conceal any trace of metal between them, creating a seamless, shimmering surface. Such precision ensures a mesmerising display of light and brilliance cascading from every angle of the case and bracelet, a successful attempt by Vacheron Constantin to capture the beauty of a field blanketed in freshly fallen snowflakes.

The snow setting extends across the dial of the new Overseas Self-Winding High Jewellery, creating a sparkling canvas of 314 brilliant-cut diamonds (1.65 ct). Atop this glittering backdrop sit 18K gold hands – white or pink gold, depending on the model – coated with Super-LumiNova for enhanced legibility. Baguette-cut diamonds represent the 12 individual hour markers (0.32 ct), their pronounced right angles and elongated faces promising to seduce onlookers. Unlike brilliant cuts, baguette diamonds channel light in controlled, architectural reflections, rather than scattering it, so any imperfections are immediately apparent. For this reason, only the most exceptional stones make the cut at Vacheron Constantin. The pink and white gold diamond-scattered dials each include a date window at 3 o’clock and display the Vacheron Constantin name and emblem just below the 12 o’clock position.

Inside the new Overseas High Jewellery case is the Calibre 1088/1 – an in-house manufactured self-winding movement that measures just 3.83 mm in thickness and comprises 144 individually hand-arranged components. Oscillating at 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz), the movement will run autonomously for up to 40 hours. The bridges are decorated with traditional Côtes de Genève and the oscillating mass is formed of 22K gold and adorned with a compass-rose motif, details which can be seen through the sapphire exhibition caseback.
Beyond the snow-set bracelet in matching gold, Vacheron Constantin provides two additional straps that can be effortlessly swapped thanks to the brand’s easy-fit system, complemented by an interchangeable pin buckle adorned with 62 brilliant-cut diamonds in the same case material. The white gold model is offered with a deep blue alligator leather strap, while the pink gold version is available with a fuchsia leather strap. Both editions also include a white rubber strap for a sportier, more contemporary aesthetic.
