Gerald Charles Maestro GC Sport Tennis Turquoise Watch Review
The Gerald Charles Maestro GC Sport Tennis Turquoise is the Swiss marque’s latest high-performance sports watch. The case weighs just 64 grammes and the watch offers 5000 g shock resistance. Angus Davies discusses the relationship between strength and weight, and how it affects performance, before looking at the composition of this ultra-light timepiece.
Weight and performance
The Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA) sets the weight limits and technical regulations for Formula 1 cars. Currently, the minimum weight for a Formula 1 car is 768 Kg, including the driver. Similarly, the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) mandates that a race bike in the Tour de France must weigh at least 6.8 Kg. When it comes to matters of performance, mitigating mass is critical to success. However, these lightweight characteristics must not come at the expense of strength.
On the face of it, a featherlight mass and extraordinary strength are mutually exclusive; however, brilliant minds have expended many hours creating materials that deliver both qualities. For example, the monocoque of a Formula 1 car is usually made from carbon fibre composites, protecting the driver from harm when first corner tussles get out of hand.
Advances in material technology have also influenced Haute Horlogerie, with several brands choosing to embrace alloys and composites in the quest for maximum strength and minimal mass. But some materials imbue watches with additional qualities, heightening their appeal and making them suited to daily wear. For instance, Grade 5 titanium is not only light and strong but also corrosion-resistant, non-magnetic and hypoallergenic – all useful attributes for a watch.
Gerald Charles Maestro GC Sport – made for the tennis court
In order to showcase its Maestro GC Sport, demonstrating its ‘comfort, lightness and performance’, Gerald Charles looked to the world of tennis to highlight the model’s advantages.
As the brand explains:
‘Through an innovative social media strategy, professional players began wearing Maestro GC Sport watches during training sessions and matches, putting them to the ultimate test. The concept was simple: if a watch could perform through serves, sprints and long rallies, its credentials would speak for themselves.’
‘What started as a creative solution quickly evolved into a genuine relationship between Gerald Charles and the world of tennis – a sport that perfectly reflects the collection’s values of precision, agility, resilience and elegance.’
Housed in a case formed of ‘Darkblast®️ Grade 5 Titanium’, the latest Maestro GC Sport provides an array of wearer benefits in addition to its featherlight mass. Allow me to elaborate.
Gerald Charles Maestro GC Sport Tennis Turquoise – dial
The hour and minute hands are teamed with a combination of batons and Arabic numerals at 3, 9 and 12 o’clock. Both the hands and indexes are lined with Super-LumiNova and emit a green hue in dim light. A central sweep seconds hand featuring a counterweight, along with a date indication at 6 o’clock, completes the inventory of functions. The model is limited to 100 pieces as denoted on the dial.

The turquoise dial is richly textured, introducing depth to the artistic canvas. Furthermore, its grained surface readily engages with light, shade shifting with subtle wrist motion. Termed a ‘degradé dial’, the central area is bright turquoise, transitioning to near-black at the perimeter of the display. The horological vista is framed with a traditional chemin de fer, aiding readability.
Gerald Charles Maestro GC Sport Tennis Turquoise – case
As previously stated, the Grade 5 titanium case is enhanced with Darkblast®️, a proprietary sandblasting technique that enhances scratch resistance and endows the metal with a matte black appearance.

The case subscribes to the brand’s signature asymmetrical style, providing a fresh alternative to the ubiquitous round case. However, the Maison has not sacrificed ergonomics on the altar of style, delivering a watch that sits at ease with the wrist. Moreover, the brand has elected to position the crown on the left flank of the case, the optimum location for right-handed players engaged in a vigorous rally.
Gerald Charles presents the watch on a turquoise Velcro strap featuring a porous finish. It is ‘hand-stitched and includes an iron core, ensuring both flexibility and strength’. The strap is made in-house and is equipped with an ‘easy removal system’, providing a user-friendly means of personalising the look of the watch.

But the headline act is undoubtedly the mass of the timepiece. The case weighs a mere 64 grammes, contributing to wearer comfort yet proves remarkably robust. According to Newton’s Second Law of Motion, resultant force (F) = mass (m) x acceleration (a). A watch with a greater mass will, by definition, subject the internal components of the watch to a greater force. Some of the components within a mechanical watch are delicate, especially the balance; hence mitigating the mass of the case makes much sense. Indeed, the Maestro GC Sport Tennis Turquoise offers 5000 g shock resistance, an extraordinary figure that serves to demonstrate the wisdom of making a lightweight watch.
Gerald Charles Manufacture Caliber CGA2001
To the rear of the timepiece, a pane of sapphire crystal grants sight of the ‘automatic, ultra-thin, Swiss Manufacture caliber ref. CGA2001’. The eye is immediately drawn to the golden oscillating mass, featuring two hexagonal openings that resemble a honeycomb pattern. Beyond the rotor, the wearer is able to see the bridges, decorated with Côtes de Genève rayonnantes, as well as the mainplate which is adorned with perlage.

Positioned adjacent to the bridges is a trottoir (channel) decorated with colimaçon, which accommodates the bulkiest part of the rotor, namely its outer edge. By taking this approach, Gerald Charles has been able to produce a slender movement measuring just 3.7 mm in thickness.
Although the Caliber CGA2001 is slender, it is equipped with two barrels that collectively deliver a power reserve of 50 hours. To the casual observer, this may not sound remarkable; however, by employing two barrels, the power serving the escapement is more linear, granting superior rate stability.

Another notable feature is the regulation system. Whereas most mechanical watches are equipped with an index-regulated balance, the movement within the Maestro GC Sport Tennis Turquoise features a superior variable-inertia balance. With this latter system, the rate is altered by adjusting inertia weights positioned on the balance wheel. It takes longer to regulate a variable-inertia balance, but it delivers superior precision and, should the watch be subjected to a shock, it is less likely to require remedial regulation. In addition, Gerald Charles has gone further by placing the inertia weights (masselottes) ‘in-board’ on the spokes of the balance wheel. When the balance wheel oscillates to and fro, it generates less air perturbation, again enhancing precision.
Closing remarks
In the upper echelons of sport, victory and failure are often separated by the slimmest of margins. The most ambitious competitors will seek ‘an edge’, eager to find tiny fractional gains in performance that culminate in success.
For the greatest tennis players, a lightweight watch capable of tolerating the accelerative forces of striking a ball makes sense. However, the practicality of such a watch is equally valid for those individuals who will never play centre court at Wimbledon. Indeed, wearer comfort, readability and robustness are relevant to all horophiles; qualities that provide the Gerald Charles Maestro GC Sport Tennis Turquoise with a competitive advantage.
