Chopard Happy Diamonds Heritage Watch Review
Chopard revisits a seminal 1976 classic with the advent of the Happy Diamonds Heritage collection, faithfully retaining the original cushion-shaped case architecture and an exquisite deep black onyx dial. Meticulously crafted from 18ct ethical yellow gold, the manufacturer’s latest mechanical release plays host to 21 freely moving diamonds, celebrating almost five decades of a design that redefined the rigid conventions of gem-setting within Haute Horlogerie.
“Diamonds are happier when they are free”
It is a universally acknowledged truth that mothers give the best advice. Whether that be the strict insistence on writing a prompt thank-you note for a Christmas gift sent from a relative you see once a year, or the timeless wisdom that if you buy cheap, you buy twice – maternal guidance has a habit of proving itself entirely correct. For Caroline Scheufele, Co-President and Artistic Director of Chopard, the defining piece of motherly wisdom she grew up with was of a decidedly more glamorous nature: “Diamonds are happier when they are free.”
Indeed, her mother’s observation became the governing philosophy for one of the most enduring signatures in modern horology. Before 1976, gem-setting was a discipline defined by carefully calculated restraint. Stones were gripped firmly by gold claws or hammered into tight bezels to achieve light reflection from a single, static angle. That was until Chopard introduced the Happy Diamonds concept, unleashing graceful, freely moving stones inspired by the fleeting brilliance of sunlight dancing on the spray of a Black Forest waterfall.
The resulting timepiece, featuring diamonds gliding across the dial unhindered, won the prestigious Golden Rose of Baden-Baden in 1976 – an accolade regarded at the time as the highest distinction for innovation in jewellery and watchmaking. Now, almost fifty years later, the Swiss Maison returns to this founding vision with the Happy Diamonds Heritage collection, introducing an exquisite re-edition that proves true elegance is rarely static.
Chopard Happy Diamond Heritage – case
The 1970s proved a disruptive era for watch case design. Traditional round silhouettes were frequently eschewed in favour of bold, experimental geometries. The Happy Diamonds models were among them, a case shape Chopard now revisits with the Heritage collection.

Chopard has presented this new chapter in two distinct sizes – 34 mm and 24 mm. However, the primary focus for horological enthusiasts is the 34 mm model, which measures a wearable 8.53 mm in height. Crafted entirely from 18ct ethical yellow gold, a commendable standard Chopard has championed across its supply chain, the case shape is softened with rounded edges and meticulous hand-polishing, imbuing the precious metal with a soft, luminous finish. The winding crown, also rendered in 18ct ethical yellow gold, is set with a 5.20 mm onyx cabochon, matching the face of the watch. Designed for daily wear, the case offers a practical water resistance of 30 metres.
Chopard Happy Diamond Heritage – dial
Chopard has retained the deep black onyx dial from the 1976 original to create a high-contrast stage for the floating diamonds. Polished to a flawless, mirror-like gleam, the sumptuous onyx canvas possesses an absolute, inky blackness. Drinking in ambient light, it provides a velvety stage for the kinetic diamonds to glide effortlessly around the dial, without inhibiting the graceful sweep of the gilded hands positioned centre stage. Encased between two layers of glare-proofed sapphire crystal, these 21 individual stones move freely, their motion driven entirely by the wearer’s wrist. Each diamond sits in a proprietary gold capsule with a bevelled base, preventing the sharp facets from scratching the glass.

To keep the choreography of light and movement uninterrupted, the central time-telling element remains wonderfully austere. The rest of the dial is completely devoid of numerals or hour markers. Matching the black onyx expanse of the dial, the Happy Diamonds Heritage is presented on a traditional black alligator leather strap that’s secured with an 18ct ethical yellow gold buckle.
Chopard Happy Diamond Heritage – movement
Demonstrating a commendable commitment to traditional watchmaking, Chopard has fitted the 34 mm Happy Diamonds Heritage with a beautifully crafted hand-wound movement. Visible via an exhibition sapphire caseback, the Chopard Calibre 10.01-C, first introduced in 2024, measures 15.70 mm in diameter with a thickness of 2.90 mm. The inclusion of a hand-wound calibre is a crucial detail, requiring the wearer to physically interact with the watch daily whilst enjoying the playful nature of the dial.

The movement comprises 101 individual components, including 19 jewels, and has a frequency of 21,600 vph (3 Hz). It features a variable-inertia balance and has a 45-hour power reserve. Furthermore, the bridges are beautifully adorned with Côtes de Genève.
Closing remarks
If maternal wisdom dictates that diamonds are happier when free, horological prudence suggests that they are best accompanied by a mechanical heart. To that end, the Maison has endowed the 34 mm Happy Diamonds Heritage watch with an engine of genuine substance. Yet it is what goes on above the mechanics that makes this Chopard timepiece both historically poignant and equally as technical. The cushion geometry, the stark onyx dial and the free-floating diamonds all work perfectly together to revive the brilliance of the 1976 original – a watch that broke free from the rigid confines of traditional gem-setting.
