The A. Lange & Söhne Salon San Francisco is a new destination boutique, conveniently located for watch obsessives living in California. Angus Davies explains that despite retailing experiencing much change in recent years, location, service and product knowledge still remain essential to delivering the finest purchasing experience.

Watch retailing

The world of watch retailing continues to evolve. The traditional bricks-and-mortar, independent boutique appears, with some notable exceptions, to be dying out. There are strong arguments in favour of the tried and tested, traditional retail approach but, likewise, there are many horophiles who have found the buying process to be somewhat wanting at times. Personally speaking, I’ve witnessed the good, the bad and the ugly.

For example, on one occasion I entered my local independent retail jeweller, an official Rolex stockist, eager to see a new model. The recently appointed manager deigned to speak to me, addressing me without the merest suggestion of a smile or even a modicum of warmth. I had bought several watches from said retailer over the years and occasionally I’ve purchased items of jewellery for my wife and daughter. As someone who values basic civility, I’ve never returned to the retailer since that woeful encounter.

Beyond the notion of basic service, there is also the important matter of product knowledge. With an increasing number of watch obsessives reading magazines and perusing various specialist websites, shop personnel need to ensure they have a reasonable understanding of the products they sell along with a decent grasp of watchmaking theory. On several occasions, I’ve been handed an example of Haute Horlogerie and been left disappointed when the member of sales staff hasn’t bothered to point out the various complications, nuanced dial details and sublime finishing. This seems disrespectful both to the client and the talented personnel responsible for crafting such beautiful objects.

Online sales

Like most people these days, I’m on speaking terms with the local Amazon delivery driver. This online platform proves a convenient means of procuring a multitude of miscellaneous items; however, it is not somewhere I would choose to go if I wanted to spend a five-figure sum on a fine watch albeit, my children’s generation may see things differently.

Perhaps, it’s an age thing, but I still enjoy visiting a retailer, trying on a watch and discovering more about its design and creation. Yes, online has its place, but in a world that seems AI-obsessed, I prefer chatting with real people. Moreover, an accompanying glass of Champagne also serves to enhance the shopping experience!

Visitors are invited to relax in a home-from-home atmosphere where various exhibits showcase the brand’s technical virtuosity and its matchless finishing skills. A library, a bar and a media room enrich the retail experience. Indeed, the new Salon provides a venue for brand devotees, watch collectors and Lange newbies to meet, talk horology and discover more about the high-end brand.

Beyond the abundant natural light and the sumptuous decor, the interior of the Salon plays host to a broad array of timepieces, all accompanied by friendly and informative service.

Retailing may have changed over the years, but location, service and product knowledge remain vitally important today and are clearly alive and well at the Sachs Building at 140 Geary Street.
