Breguet Marine Tourbillon 5577 Watch Review
The Breguet Marine Tourbillon 5577 is a contemporary watch, imbued with a sporty vibe. It incorporates cutting-edge materials while respecting some Breguet traditions. Moreover, this reference is endowed with Abraham-Louis Breguet’s legendary gravity-defying mechanism. Angus Davies appraises the composition of this technical tour-de-force; a watch made for discerning horophiles.
The space race
In August 1955, the USSR declared its intention to launch a satellite. Approximately two years later, in October 1957, the ambitious communist state successfully launched Sputnik 1. It lit the blue touch paper, leading the US and USSR to pursue dominance of space with a vengeance. Indeed, this galactic battle became known as the ‘space race’, an important period in 20th-century history that spanned 20 years.
Like the ‘space race’, England and France, often adversaries during the 1700s, both with naval fleets, sought supremacy at sea. Moreover, each nation, eager to preserve its fleet, wanted to find a means of determining longitude at sea. But why was this important and what did it have to do with watchmaking? Allow me to elaborate.
England – Longitude Act of 1714
In 1707, four warships crashed into the rocks near the Isles of Scilly, resulting in the loss of over 1300 lives. This tragedy led to the British government establishing the Longitude Act of 1714 and offering a reward of £20,000 to the first person to discover a reliable means of determining longitude at sea.
John Harrison (1693 – 1776)
John Harrison, an English carpenter and clockmaker, created his first marine chronometer, the H1, in 1735. Later, he produced the H2 but ultimately set it aside after discovering it had an inherent problem. He went on to release the H3 (1740) and later, his most successful marine chronometer, the H4 (1759). This was subjected to trials in 1761 and subsequently tested over several years thereafter. Harrison received £8,750 in 1773 for his marine chronometer, an amount falling far short of the reward promised back in 1714.
Ferdinand Berthoud (1727 – 1807)
Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the English Channel, Ferdinand Berthoud came to prominence writing several papers relating to horology and, most notably, the ‘Traité des horloges marines’ (Treatise on marine clocks). In 1763, Louis XV tasked Ferdinand Berthoud with examining John Harrison’s H4 Marine Timekeeper; however, unsurprisingly, Harrison declined Berthoud’s request to see the H4.
Undeterred, Berthoud produced two marine clocks in 1765 and several more over the years that followed. In 1770, he was appointed ‘Horloger-Mécanicien du Roi et de la Marine’ (Watchmaker-Mechanic to the King and to the Navy). This role was usually assigned for life; however, when he was approximately 75 years of age, Ferdinand Berthoud resigned and the mantle passed to his nephew, Louis Berthoud (1802). Eventually, in 1815, Abraham-Louis Breguet assumed the role, known then as ‘Chronometer-maker by appointment to the Royal Navy’.
Abraham-Louis Breguet (1747-1823)
Before assuming said prestigious role, Abraham-Louis Breguet was made a member of the Board of Longitude in Paris. Between 1815 and 1823, Breguet made 78 marine chronometers, mostly for merchant vessels and private individuals. Abraham-Louis Breguet’s legitimacy in the field of marine chronometers was unimpeachable.
Breguet Marine first released in 1990
Wishing to pay tribute to its naval heritage, Breguet released its inaugural ‘Marine’ watch in 1990. This model was sporty when contrasted with the brand’s more traditional offerings. A screw-locked crown, nestled between the robust shoulders of a crown protector, contributed to the model’s 50 m water resistance. Fitted with a self-winding movement, the watch was ideally suited to daily wear. However, while the model was undoubtedly new, its parentage remained obvious courtesy of its guilloché dial, Breguet hands and slender lugs.

The Marine line was updated in 2004, culminating in a more contemporary and sporty aesthetic. In 2017, the collection was updated again and featured an evolution of Breguet’s hour and minute hands incorporating luminescent treatment. In addition, the date display was relocated to 3 o’clock. This new series still employed Roman numerals to denote the hours albeit their appearance was now more fulsome.
As the above dates show, Breguet does not flit from one style to another. This ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ approach is, in my opinion, consistent with the notion of luxury and serves to reassure clients that a newly acquired timepiece won’t be discontinued a few months later.
Despite enlarging the Marine collection in recent years, new models still subscribe to the same design language introduced in 2017 (eg the Breguet Marine Hora Mundi 5557). Last year, the prestigious Maison unveiled a new addition to the Marine line, this time equipped with a tourbillon, the ingenious mechanism patented by Abraham-Louis Breguet.
Breguet Marine Tourbillon 5577 – dial
The Breguet Marine 5577 is available in two variants, 18K rose gold and platinum. Each model can be specified with a colour-coordinating alligator strap or an optimally-hued rubber strap. The 18K rose gold case is paired with a slate-grey coloured dial while the platinum variant is matched with a blue dial. Personally speaking, I prefer the rose gold, slate-grey and rubber strap ensemble, hence this reference is the focus of my attention hereafter.

Breguet hands first appeared around 1783 and have since become a recognised signature of the brand. In this instance, the hands are a modern take on the 18th century design, executed in gold and incorporating a generous amount of luminescent treatment. The hands are paired with plump Roman numerals, again lined with luminescent material. Interestingly, the hour and minute display, including the minute track, is positioned off-centre and biased to the left side of the case. This asymmetric layout, no doubt influenced by the position of the tourbillon, endows the dial with a delightful idiosyncratic charm.

Fellow admirers of Breguet will look at the tourbillon and immediately recall the history behind the gravity-defying mechanism. Abraham-Louis Breguet, having recognised that gravity would adversely affect the regularity of the movement, had the inspired idea of placing the escapement and regulating organ within a revolving cage. As it rotated, the motion of the cage negated gravity’s influence on the rate. Breguet patented his invention in 1801. In terms of the Breguet Marine 5577, the cage rotates 360° every minute and is endowed with a neat hand, indicating the running seconds.

A sunray motif adorns the dial, save for the hour track which is presented in a contrasting smooth finish.
Breguet Marine Tourbillon 5577 – case
Measuring 42.5 mm in diameter, the Breguet Marine Tourbillon 5577 is generously sized without being cumbersome. The lugs are short, making the watch appear smaller when affixed to the wrist. The case has a thickness of just 9.35 mm, a comparatively modest figure for a watch that’s equipped with a tourbillon and water-resistant to 100 m. Should the wearer prefer to hide the watch beneath the cuff, it won’t be a problem.

Like its forebears, the Marine Tourbillon 5577 has crown protectors, but the composition remains discreet and tasteful. Despite its neoteric design, the case incorporates caseband fluting, a detail much loved by disciples of Breguet. An exhibition caseback grants sight of the self-winding Calibre 581.
Breguet Calibre 581
The Calibre 581 is slender, measuring a mere 3 mm in height; a remarkable feat considering it comprises 330 components and houses such notable complexity. Furthermore, the movement is automatic, a characteristic that usually increases thickness due to the presence of an oscillating mass. However, on this occasion, the Calibre 581 eschews the usual semi-circular weight positioned atop the bridges in favour of a peripheral mass running in a channel between the bridges and the case interior. This proves an intelligent, less bulky and eminently more refined means of harvesting energy from the natural motion of the wearer’s wrist.


A compass motif adorns the barrel, a seemly reminder of Abraham-Louis Breguet’s prowess at making marine chronometers. The barrel harnesses sufficient power to deliver up to 80 hours of autonomous operation. The bridges are adorned with ‘a straight ribbed motif’. The screws are mirror-polished and, along with the jewels, sit in polished sinks. This impeccable finishing is repeated at the front of the watch. For example, the large bridge spanning the dial aperture, along with the mobile stud holder, is mirror-polished to a brilliant conclusion. Such examples of refinement place Breguet in the highest echelons of watchmaking.

It is clear that Breguet respects traditions while simultaneously embracing cutting-edge technology when this confers advancement. For example, the tourbillon cage is formed of titanium, a lightweight material that promises to mitigate energy consumption as the cage rotates. Likewise, the balance spring is made from silicon (silicium in French), a glass-like material manufactured in a laboratory-type environment. Silicon is not susceptible to corrosion nor magnetic influence. Furthermore, it is not liable to corrode, remains unaffected by changes in temperature and is friction-free; all attributes for watchmaking.

The balance has a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz) and is regulated with inertia weights set in the rim. Termed a ‘variable-inertia balance’, the effective length of the balance spring is fixed and the rate is altered by adjusting the inertia weights. When contrasted with the ubiquitous raquette, the variable-inertia balance can be regulated more precisely. Moreover, should the watch be subjected to a shock, it is less likely to require remedial regulation. Breguet has positioned the four inertia weights in recesses set within the rim of the balance wheel. This mitigates air turbulence when the balance wheel is in motion, augmenting precision. As ever Breguet’s attention to detail is beyond reproach.
Breguet Marine Tourbillon 5577 – closing remarks
Alongside his many achievements upon terra firma, Abraham-Louis Breguet’s renown also extended to the sea. In the 1700s, marine chronometers were considered cutting-edge and essential for safely navigating treacherous seas. Breguet was no stranger to this horological genre, becoming a member of the Board of Longitude in Paris before ultimately becoming ‘Chronometer-maker by appointment to the Royal Navy’.
The Marine Tourbillon 5577 pays tribute to the famous watchmaker while at the same time adopting modern-day materials such as silicon and titanium. I suspect Monsieur Breguet would have approved of using contemporary materials as he was always an enlightened individual who continuously pushed boundaries. Deftly steering a course between tradition and modernity, the Breguet Marine Tourbillon 5577 bestows a degree of excellence that will resonate with many discerning horophiles and would undoubtedly have made Abraham-Louis Breguet very proud if he were alive today.
