The Man, The Myth and The Orange Dial
In 1969, before achieving literary superstardom, Clive Cussler departed his modest dive shop job clutching a simple parting gift: an orange-dialled DOXA SUB 300T. It would prove crucial to the brand’s popularity because when Cussler began penning his high-octane novels, he strapped this very watch to the wrist of his rugged protagonist, Dirk Pitt.
This fictional partnership is what, in part, saved the brand from extinction during the quartz crisis. Cussler’s evocative prose kept the flame alive for millions of readers. While Doxa has occasionally dabbled with titanium on larger, more modern platforms like the imposing SUB 800Ti model, the lightweight metal has never been used on the historically faithful SUB 300 collection before now. The metal is not to be confused with more common Grade 2 titanium, which is commercially pure but somewhat softer. Grade 5 is an advanced alloy consisting of 90% titanium, 6% aluminium, and 4% vanadium, bringing a vast array of real-world benefits to the wrist.
Aside from being hypoallergenic, exceptionally strong and resistant to saltwater corrosion, Grade 5 titanium is incredibly light, ensuring the 42.5 mm × 45 mm cushion case offers wrist presence free of hernia-inducing heft.
Grade 5 titanium has a low ductility, meaning it cannot be stamped. Therefore, it must be machined using CNC (computer numerical control), which drives up production costs. Moreover, when milling Grade 5 titanium, a CNC machine must operate at much slower speeds to prevent causing heat damage to the alloy. It is due to the expense of forming cases in Grade 5 titanium that the material is usually the preserve of high-end watchmaking.
Despite moving to the lightweight alloy, the classic SUB 300 design remains perfectly intact save for the removal of the helium escape valve and the use of a boxed sapphire crystal. This latter detail shares the appearance of historic models fitted with Plexiglas but with added modern-day robustness. Water-resistant to 300 metres, the DOXA SUB 300 Ti5 Clive Cussler still features the brand’s patented unidirectional rotating bezel with its famous dual-scale layout. Moreover, the unidirectional bezel pairs deep orange depth markings on the outer polished ring and black timing minutes on the inner brushed ring.

The new DOXA SUB 300 Ti5 Clive Cussler introduces an entirely new dial design for DOXA: a dual-plane sandwich construction. Both layers are made from the same Grade 5 titanium as the case, the base layer of which is coated with a generous layer of Super-LumiNova and includes the printed minute track. Directly above sits a precision-cut upper titanium plate that provides crisp, clean apertures for the indexes and date window. This dual-plane arrangement results in a striking three-dimensional display.
The dial is finished in a clean, matte sandblasted grey with glossy black lacquered hands indicating the hours and running seconds, while an oversized orange hand indicates the minutes. Look closely at the date window at 3 o’clock and you’ll spot a lovely hidden nod to the late author. The numerals 15, 7, and 31 are printed in bright orange, quietly referencing Clive Cussler’s date of birth – 15th July 1931.

A solid, screw-in titanium caseback is located to the rear of the watch and bears the official emblem of the National Underwater and Marine Agency (NUMA). A portion of the sale proceeds from each of the 300 limited-edition pieces goes directly to NUMA, helping fund the non-profit organisation’s maritime preservation efforts. Sat beneath the caseback is a COSC-certified Sellita SW200-1 automatic calibre.
The Sellita SW200-1 is a popular movement prized for its reliability and ease of servicing. DOXA has enhanced the specification of the watch by subjecting the movement to the independent scrutiny of COSC, culminating in the award of chronometer certification. To achieve this feat, each limited edition model has met all ‘7 criteria for certification’, including tests in 5 positions and 3 temperatures. With a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour, the movement features custom DOXA decoration and has a power reserve of approximately 38 hours.
DOXA pairs its latest limited edition dive watch with a black Dive Flex rubber strap featuring a perforated, tropical-style pattern that tastefully captures the spirit of the late 1960s. It secures to the wrist with a Grade 5 titanium pin buckle adorned with the DOXA logo.
