The origins of Valentine’s Day
Valentine’s Day is just around the corner and Cupid is sharpening his arrows. There are a couple of stories about this romantic day. One retelling has Saint Valentine thrown into prison for assisting tortured Christians to escape from Roman detention centres.
The most popular story, however, is that Saint Valentine worked as a priest in Rome back in the third century. When Emperor Claudius II decreed marriage was outlawed for men, Saint Valentine continued to perform nuptials in secret. The Emperor thought single men would make better soldiers. Unfortunately, the love-affirming Saint was eventually caught and subsequently executed in approximately 269 AD. The execution happened on February 14 and that’s where the date for Valentine’s Day comes from.
Somewhere around the Middle Ages, Valentine’s Day became associated with romantic love. England and France consider 14th February as the day when birds commence mating, but it wasn’t until the 19th century that notes, tokens of affection and eventually cards were used to express love.

The hour markers are depicted with alternating stylised Arabic numerals and batons, while the hands are crafted in white gold. To achieve the gradient of colours on the indexes, they are printed front and back on the mother-of-pearl dial. The colour of the indexes isn’t static either, appearing or disappearing depending upon the angle of the watch and the way the light reflects. Matching the indexes, the date wheel has a violet numeral set against a white background, while the Manufacture’s branding is also highlighted in the same rosy pink and violet palette.

For an elegant flash to complement the dial, the 36 mm stainless steel case incorporates a bezel with 52 brilliant-cut diamonds. The Lady Serenade Valentine’s Day 2024 gets another splash of colour from the “blossom red” strap that secures the timepiece to the wrist and pulls the composition together.
