Glashütte Original SeaQ reed green
The Glashütte Original SeaQ reed green is a new version of the brand’s vintage-inspired divers’ watch. It shuns the utilitarian character of the Spezimatic Type RP TS 200 from 1969 in favour of notably handsome aesthetics. However, the model remains robust and is a highly practical ownership proposition, perfectly suited to daily life.
Last year, Glashütte Original unveiled the additional versions of its SeaQ line with prepossessing blue dials. These models, including a sublime gem-set option, came on the back of the 2019 black dial references. Now, the prestigious watch brand from Saxony has released the Glashütte Original SeaQ in reed green.
Spezimatic Type RP TS 200
This model was inspired by the Spezimatic Type RP TS 200 from 1969. Originally, the watch was intended for combat and sports use and was functional rather than an object of beauty. It was born during the communist era of the DDR when utilitarianism took precedence over aesthetic charms. However, with the passage of time this vintage model has seemingly blossomed and would now be described as good-looking and wonderfully retro.
Glashütte Original SeaQ
One of the brand’s competencies, and there are several, is that it makes its own dials at the company’s own dedicated facility in Pforzheim. Having worn several of the brand’s watches, I can attest that the quality of each horological canvas is beyond reproach and befits the term Haute Horlogerie. By equipping the SeaQ with a reed green lacquered dial, the model’s utilitarian origins seem a distant memory, yet its practicality remains undiminished. The result is a watch you could wear every day, albeit it certainly couldn’t be described as everyday.
Calibre 39-11
The rotating bezel is presented in green ceramic and the model is compliant with DIN 8306 / ISO 6425 diver’s watch standards. The German luxury marque has respected divers’ watch convention by equipping the model with a solid caseback. Traditionalists will appreciate this latter detail, however, knowing that the beautifully finished Calibre 39-11 lies within, but is out of sight may frustrate some inquisitive eyes.
Prospective purchasers are indulged with a vast choice of strap and bracelet options, including a black rubber strap, grey synthetic strap and metal bracelet in stainless steel. The rubber strap and synthetic strap can be specified with either a pin buckle or fold fastener.
Some commentators may describe the Glashütte Original SeaQ reed green as merely an ‘animation’, however, I would argue that it demonstrates the German company’s willingness to enlarge its portfolio, thereby sating the needs of even more buyers and what’s wrong with that?
