Power is a seductive force known to entice men to press the throttle of a performance car just a little harder than they should. It is said that some women find powerful men very attractive and are drawn to captains of industry and leading political figures.
Now, MeisterSinger chooses to seduce watch enthusiasts with a timepiece equipped with a prodigious power reserve of 120 hours. Moreover, the Circularis Power Reserve reminds the wearer of the energy stored within its twin barrels, courtesy of the clear power reserve indicator located at 9 o’clock.
The dial
The silver opaline dial is drop-dead gorgeous. It is incredibly clean, free of distracting detail and an exemplar of lucidity.
The role of the hour and minute hands is supplanted with one blue central hand. It resembles an elongated isosceles triangle and articulates time wonderfully, pointing to the relevant marking with laser-like precision.
Each hour is marked with a neat, trapezoidal index. In between each hour marker, 5-minute integers are denoted with fine black lines, each depicted in varying lengths depending on their significance e.g. the line for 30 minutes is longer than the line for 5 minutes.
Two digit Arabic numerals indicate the hours. The consistent use of two digits, even when normally one numeral suffices, confers a balance to the dial and looks magnificent.
At 3 o’clock is a date display, proclaiming the date via a circular aperture. The visibility of the aperture and date is accentuated with the addition of a gleaming beveled edge on the rim of the display.
At 9 o’clock there is a notable absence of an hour marker. In this instance it has been replaced with an arcing power reserve indicator, marked at one side ‘0 H’ and at the other extreme ‘120 H’. The power reserve indicator is simple to interpret. Furthermore, despite having no hour marker, the time remains simple to discern.
Some readers may not be accustomed to wearing a MeisterSinger single-handed timepiece. Initially it seems counter-intuitive to not have conventional hour and minute hands. However, the briefest association with a MeisterSinger results in the wearer soon becoming accustomed to the lone hand.
The case
Measuring 43mm in diameter, the stainless steel case is ubiquitously shiny with a plethora of highly contoured surfaces. The case-band arcs, tapering inwards adjacent the case-back. The lugs are long, slender and elegantly project outwards from the case. The gorgeous Cognac leather strap on my press loan was paired with a stainless steel deployant buckle.
The crown features a fluted grip and fermata symbol on its vertical plane. A cylindrical projection emanates from the case-band, providing a vertical flank for the crown to affix to. The case-back is secured with four screws. A pane of sapphire crystal, gracing the dorsal plane of the watch, affords views of the MSH02 hand-wound movement.
I found the overall dimensions of the case, together with the supremely smooth case-band and flat, unobtrusive case-back bestowed a high level of wearer comfort.
The movement
The MSH02 hand-wound movement is beautifully presented. The bridges are adorned with circular Côtes de Genève motif and blued screws abound. The two barrel covers feature circular graining. The bridge bevels gleam beautifully and the balance cock features a simple index adjuster to alter the rate of the watch.
The frequency of the balance is 28,800 VpH (4Hz), the movement contains 31 jewels and, as stated previously, the watch has an impressive power reserve of 120 hours.
This is a handsome movement and features a outstanding level of finishing considering the comparatively modest asking price.
Closing remarks
I accept I have already shown my hand, readily revealing my affection for this watch. It is very good-looking and the movement is festooned with delightful finishing, surpassing my expectations for a watch at this price level.
The display is simple to interpret and the overall aesthetic of the watch is very attractive. While the watch features both a date display and power reserve indicator the dial remains very clean and uncluttered.
The numerous contours to the case remind the wearer that the construction of the case is beautifully executed. The smooth contours also confer a snag-free, highly comfortable interface with the wearer’s arm.
Ultimately, I have to discuss the movement. It is blessed with fabulous finishing and features two barrels which harness much energy. Indeed, with so much power and a suitable indicator on the dial, MeisterSinger has produced a watch with the power to seduce.
