MeisterSinger Pangaea 2023 Watch Review
The MeisterSinger Pangaea 2023 is offered in three dial variants. Measuring 40 mm in diameter with short lugs, the model should suit the majority of wrists. Recently, Angus Davies wore the single-hand watch for a number of days and was surprised by the attention it received from people that ordinarily show little interest in mechanical watches.
Flying with a MeisterSinger
Recently I flew to Munich wearing the new MeisterSinger Pangaea 2023. The watch was not mine, but a press sample provided by the German brand for 10-days of hands-on evaluation.
As for the flight, it was the usual scenario. I sat in a figure-hugging seat and politely smiled while the surly cabin steward served me a cup of second-rate coffee. Once the plane had landed, I stood with my fellow passengers, all of us desperate to escape the cramped conditions, waiting for what seemed like an inordinate amount of time for the airbridge to arrive.
While waiting, I noticed a lady looking at the MeisterSinger watch affixed to my wrist and with a slightly bemused expression on her face she asked, “What time is it?” I duly replied and then she went on to enquire, “How do you read the time on that watch?” With no airbridge in sight, I proceeded to answer, explaining that there are several clocks dotted around Europe that impart the time with a single hand.
I could tell that she was impressed and it made me reflect on the specification of the MeisterSinger Pangaea fitted to my wrist. Unlike some ostentatious displays of wealth which shout ‘look at me’, often using garish colours and numerous gems, the MeisterSinger Pangaea is quietly spoken. Indeed, you could describe it as an exemplar of discreet luxury.
Since arriving back in England, I’ve worn the watch in various social situations and many of my friends (the non-watch-obsessive types) have passed comments about it. Primarily discussions have centred on its design and, in particular, its single hand. So, what it is about the MeisterSinger Pangaea that arouses such interest among non-watch-geeks?
MeisterSinger Pangaea 2023 – dial
Well, everything starts with the black single needle-like hand that articulates both the hours and minutes. Consistent with other MeisterSinger watches, the lone hand indicates the prevailing time in 5-minute segments. Clock-watchers may be frustrated that there’s no provision for counting seconds, but for most people, the MeisterSinger Pangaea says all they need to know in a notably relaxed way.
The Pangaea has been a popular member of the brand’s collection for a number of years with my loan being the latest specification model for 2023, incorporating an attractive blend of hues. The Münster-based brand offers the MeisterSinger Pangaea 2023 in three dial colours: ivory, sunburst blue and white, all retailing at £2190 (RRP as of 18.7.2023). My press sample featured the white dial (PM9901G).
Upholding MeisterSinger tradition, the Pangaea 2023 employs double-digit hour markers, in this instance expressed in a golden hue. In addition, a fine blue line also indicates the hours, straddling said double-digit markings, aiding legibility while simultaneously conferring an abundance of style.
MeisterSinger Pangaea 2023 – case
Housed in a 40 mm stainless steel case, endowed with neat, truncated horns, the watch will undoubtedly suit a broad array of wrist sizes. Furthermore, the caseband slopes inwards as it approaches the caseback, causing the watch to ergonomically nuzzle the wrist. In fact, while MeisterSinger states the watch measures 10.5 mm in height, the interaction with the wrist makes the watch seem much slimmer. Having worn the watch over a number of days, I noticed that it does not protrude from the wrist, contributing to the overall perception of neatness.
Another interesting characteristic of the caseband is that it not only does it taper inwards, it is also sinuous. As such, I repeatedly found myself stroking the caseband, deriving cathartic relief from its curvaceous surfaces. Moreover, the bezel is far slimmer than it appears in pictures and its narrow profile affords more room for the dial to breathe.
The crown is prominent, hence easy to grip, however, unlike some watches, the generously sized grip does not impinge on the wrist. All exterior surfaces of the Pangaea’s case are presented in highly polished form and yet, nothing feels excessive or showy. Indeed, the MeisterSinger Pangaea 2023 remains a paragon of understated elegance.
The watch is fitted with an exhibition caseback, retained with six screws. My press sample was presented on a Cognac strap paired with a stainless steel pin buckle. The strap features quick-release catches to the rear, facilitating simple removal without the need for tools.
MeisterSinger Pangaea – Sellita SW 300
The watch is fitted with a Sellita SW 300. The movement is adorned with colimaçon, a form of decoration that extends to the mainplate, automatic device bridge and oscillating mass. In addition, the movement features blued screws upholding watchmaking tradition.
One characteristic of the Sellita SW300 is that it is slender, measuring just 3.6 mm in height. Indeed, it is the movement’s svelte profile that has allowed MeisterSinger to produce a modestly sized timepiece. Assuming the watch is fully wound, it will run autonomously for 42 hours.
Closing thoughts
Wearing the MeisterSinger Pangaea for a few days was a joy. It is slender, unobtrusive and very comfortable to wear.
The dial is simple to read and does not confuse matters with unnecessary clutter. Interestingly, I imported an image of the dial into Photoshop and began deleting dial elements as well as adding text just to see how it would look. For example, I cloned a white area of the dial and wiped off the word ‘AUTOMATIC’. As I suspected, when adding or removing text or, indeed any dial element, the watch doesn’t look quite as good. This serves to prove MeisterSinger has hit the sweet spot with the Pangaea.
When a non-watch-geek views the MeisterSinger Pangaea 2023, they probably don’t fixate on how many jewels the movement has, how long the firm has been trading or whether a film star or footballer has been photographed wearing the watch. On the contrary, they are simply drawn to a handsome watch that imparts time in a very unique, logical way. That said, irrespective of whether you are a newbie to luxury watches or a horological geek, you will find much to love about this latest version of the MeisterSinger Pangaea.
