Panerai Luminor Quaranta Razer (PAM01353)

Panerai Luminor Quaranta Razer (PAM01353)

The Panerai Luminor Quaranta Razer (PAM01353) is a limited-edition model created in partnership with Razer, the ‘leading global lifestyle brand for gamers’. While Panerai has a long history of making watches that bestow peerless luminescence in dim light, this particular watch, limited to just 500 pieces, is comparatively understated.

Luminous devices since 1913

Founded in 1860, Panerai began life as a watch shop in Florence. Later, it diversified into high-precision mechanical engineering and became an official supplier to the Royal Italian Navy. Over the years, its product portfolio grew and, in 1913, the firm began making luminous devices for firing naval guns at night, timing mechanisms, depth gauges and mechanical calculators. The luminous substance employed by the firm was called ‘Radiomir’, a radioactive material which was patented by Guido Panerai in 1915. Thereafter, Panerai would forever be linked with watches incorporating luminous materials.

A partnership with Razer

While Panerai has a long history dating back to the 19th century, Razer is a comparatively young company. Founded in 2005 by Min-Liang Tan and Robert Krakoff, the company splits its operations between California and Singapore. Razer, the ‘leading global lifestyle brand for gamers’ offers everything from laptops, desktops and monitors to keyboards, headsets and speakers. In 2020, the company announced sales in excess of US $1 Billion. Today the firm’s software has ‘over 175 million users’.

Razer’s company logo comprises three entwined snakes and its corporate colour scheme consists of black and acid green hues. Both the brand’s logo and corporate colours feature on a new co-branded model from Panerai.

Panerai Luminor Quaranta Razer (PAM01353) – stealthy style

Based on the Luminor Quaranta, the sandwich dial features the brand’s signature Arabic numerals and baton-shaped indexes, albeit expressed in a stealthy style seldom seen on a Panerai model. The customary small seconds dial at 9 o’clock is appointed with an electric green hand, subscribing to Razer’s corporate colours. This splash of colour imbues the composition with a venom-rich bite.

A case made of eSteel™️ with DLC

The 40mm case is made from eSteel™️, a recycled form of steel, and dressed in a covert coat of DLC. Panerai’s trademark crown guard makes an appearance, a detail that evokes a smile on the face of any self-respecting Paneristi. Unlike many modern-day watches, the caseback eschews glazing in favour of a solid eSteel™️caseback embellished with Razer’s three-snake logo.

Self-effacing theme

While the appearance of this watch shuns attention, save for the lime-hued small seconds hand, the strap brims with citrus zest. Made from recycled black PET, the strap is enlivened with green stitching. The buckle is formed of steel with DLC treatment, subscribing to the self-effacing theme of the watch head.
