Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Sport Chronograph Sandstone Watch Review
The Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Sport Chronograph Sandstone is housed in a 42 mm, 18ct rose gold case. Since the advent of the inaugural Tonda PF in 2021, the brand’s collection of elegant sports models has become synonymous with the considered use of shade, texture and attention to detail. This latest chronograph, endowed with a column-wheel and vertical coupling, featuring a high-frequency regulating organ, is Chronometer certified (COSC) and beautifully finished. US-based Marcus Henry provides a detailed insight into the Swiss marque’s refined exemplar of discreet luxury.
Sports watches from the 70s
For most, the idea of a sports watch usually conjures up images of an integrated bracelet, copious amounts of stainless steel and perhaps a few industrial-style screws running through the bezel. Let’s be honest, it’s a winning formula, so it’s one that has seen countless iterations over the decades since the concept was first introduced in the ’70s.
Parmigiani Fleurier – elegance and purity of design
Parmigiani Fleurier, however, is known for doing things a bit differently. Its watches exhibit class like an elegantly-dressed man across the room who knows about matters of deportment and sartorial style. It doesn’t take an expert eye to see the elegance and purity of design in each of PF’s creations; they speak for themselves with a quiet, restrained self-confidence.
In particular, the Maison’s Tonda Sport Chrono collection is a beautiful realisation of the brand’s core identity. In a lot of ways, it’s about as close to perfect as you can get for an elegant, daily wear sports watch. To be clear, it’s not ‘sporty’ in the extreme sense of the term – you won’t want to subject this watch to the shocks of playing tennis or golf, but it is, in my humble opinion, one of the best everyday companions for those with a keen appreciation for the subtlety of classical, finely crafted timepieces.
But for such a restrained and unassuming timepiece, what is it that makes Parmigiani’s latest creation so good? I believe that above all, it’s the brand’s spotless attention to all possible details.
Need an example? One of my favorite stories about Parmigiani Fleurier concerns the overall shape and construction of this collection, which has been perfected to a degree that even the highest of haute horlogerie brands struggle to attain. The Tonda Sport, as it turns out, is one of the few models where you can put it on, unbuckle the strap and rotate your wrist, knowing the watch will stay put and not fall off. While I haven’t yet had the pleasure of testing this claim out for myself, I don’t have any trouble believing it. Put simply, Parmigiani Fleurier is fastidious about details, obsessing over the minutest elements, even those aspects most brands overlook. On that note, let’s begin our breakdown of this watch.
Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Sport Chronograph Sandstone – Tufo strap
Take the strap on this stunning model, a detail frequently overlooked by most watch brands. Slap some black or brown alligator leather on there and call it a day, right? Not so here. PF has adorned this piece with an elegant rubber strap which is so good they’ve given it a name: Tufo. Known as ‘tuff’ in English, the name refers to the unique Mediterranean volcanic rock whose colour the strap is meant to evoke. Quite simply, its colour is the perfect complement to the watch’s dial – but more on that later. Beyond that, its texture is astonishingly complex as well, to the point where it is easy to forget that it’s actually made from rubber. The brand describes its appearance as ‘corduroy-like’.

The faint tonal hue of the strap magnificently brings out the ‘Sandstone’ dial at the heart of it all. Ever so slightly off-white, it shimmers superbly in the light thanks to an extremely fine clou triangulaire (‘triangular nail’) guilloché pattern. The luminescence is warm and gentle, white at first glance then beautifully resolving into a complex and inviting shade, very much like its namesake. To further emphasise the space given to this texture, the indices are kept small and unobtrusive, which maximises the negative space of the dial. I do want to add here that this latter choice is strikingly bold. Some watches are much-maligned for having too much negative space due to the small size of the indices but in this case, the decision affords the beautifully executed guilloché sufficient space to breathe.

Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Sport Chronograph Sandstone – dial
At first glance, the dial appears simple, yet it is complex in its construction. The layout is balanced with three subdials, offset by the elliptical cartouche bearing the brand’s signature. Each one of the recessed subdials has been treated with an even, matte grenage finish, one of the brand’s most identifiable trademarks since the release of their Toric Petite Seconde model. In keeping with the watch’s sporty intent, these are all simple and readable. This attention to legibility is carried forward by the large, skeletonised alpha hands tipped with black lume and the twelve applied faceted indices, again adorned with black lume.
Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Sport Chronograph Sandstone – case
Framing, protecting and encapsulating the dial, the Tonda Sport Chrono’s 42 mm case is a masterclass in finishing. The lugs and case flanks juxtapose mirror polishing and brushed finishing to dazzling effect. For instance, the polished chronograph pushers executed in a high gleam finish, wonderully contrast with the brushed caseband.
Parmigiani Fleurier PF070 caliber – column wheel and vertical coupling
Beyond the aesthetic allure of the pushers, they deliver a rare, exalted level of mechanical excellence. The action of the pushers is silky smooth, a tactile sensation that is known to cause even the most hardened watch collector to smile with delight, a quality that is unique to the upper echelons of watchmaking. More than that, the chronograph unites a column wheel and vertical clutch. When operating a cam-actuated chronograph featuring a module atop a base movement, you will witness the central chronograph seconds hand slightly wobble. In contrast, actuate the chronograph seconds hand on the Tonda Sport Chrono and you will see it commence its journey without hesitation.
Parmigiani Fleurier PF070 caliber – other highlights
None of this mechanical prowess would be possible without the superb movement under the hood, which in this instance is the in-house caliber PF070, a spectacular union of 288 components working in mechanical concert while delivering a glorious aesthetic. The architecture is sublime and the satin-finished bridges contrast beautifully with the 22K rose gold winding rotor.

It’s got the mechanical chops to back up its stunning good looks too. For instance, it features a variable-inertia balance and, most significantly of all, it incorporates a high-beat balance operating at a frequency of 5 Hz (36,000 vph). This higher frequency allows for better accuracy as the movement is more resistant to shocks. In some instances, a higher cadence can increase wear or result in a reduced power reserve. However, Parmigiani Fleurier knows a thing or two about high-frequency movements. Indeed, despite its 5Hz cadence, the PF070 is still capable of running autonomously for 65 hours. The movement, as you would expect, is COSC-certified.
Parmigiani Fleurier Tonda PF Sport Chronograph Sandstone – closing remarks
This watch is a true work of art in a way that many luxury timepieces strive to become, but only a rare few achieve. The Tonda Sport Chrono marries mechanical perfection with aesthetic beauty, especially the considered play with subtle tonal shades. Admittedly, at CHF 49,000, it doesn’t come cheap… but for a solid rose gold mechanical sports watch, crafted by Parmigiani Fleurier, it makes a compelling case for selection.
