TAG Heuer Carrera Red Dial Limited Edition
The TAG Heuer Carrera Red Dial Limited Edition, inspired by the reference 2447 of the 1960s, is bathed in passionate crimson shades and equipped with the Maison’s in-house movement, the Calibre Heuer 02 Automatic. US-based Meehna Goldsmith looks back at the history of the Heuer Carrera of 1963 before going on to examine this latest natty number from La Chaux-de-Fonds.
The TAG Heuer Carrera Red Dial Limited Edition needs no announcement. It strides into the room with style and a bit of swagger. Dressed in crimson clothes, the dial radiates passion with a bit of an edge. That about sums up Heuer’s approach to its timepieces.
Heuer Carrera (1962)
Before taking a closer look at this fiery timing instrument, let’s roll back to 1962. The history of the TAG Heuer Carrera is a rather interesting one. While the vast majority of watches are designed and then given a moniker, Jack Heuer found a name first and had to come up with the watch to match. Here’s how the tale goes:
In 1962, Heuer was the official timekeeper of the ’12 Hours Race’ at Sebring in Florida. In appreciation, the Sports Car Club of America invited Jack Heuer to come and watch the race. While at the track, Heuer heard about the Carrera Panamericana Mexico. So perilous and deadly was this race that it was discontinued in 1954 after only five years. Body count: 27 racers and spectators. That’s insane. I’d rather take my chances as a lion tamer.
Nonetheless, the name Carrera caught Heuer’s fancy. In Spanish the word means “race” or “career”, and it lilts off the tongue in most languages. Upon his return to Switzerland, Heuer registered the name Heuer Carrera. The following year (1963), Heuer welcomed the Carrera Chronograph into its stable.
Jack Heuer was considered to have a particular eye for aesthetics. He gravitated towards modern design embodied by Le Corbusier and Charles Eames. In developing the Carrera’s tri-compax dial, Heuer insisted on a sharp and clean presentation for maximum clarity. At the time, plastic crystals protecting the dial stayed in place through the use of a tension ring. Heuer realised this was open real estate for the taking and moved the 1/5-second markers to the tension ring. Voila! Now there was more room to let the other indications stretch their legs a bit on the dial.
Heuer Carrera Reference 2447
The TAG Heuer Carrera Red Dial Limited Edition takes inspiration from the original Heuer Carrera: reference 2447. When you place the Red Dial up against the original, you’ll see that they have the same shapely figure that includes TAG’s signature lugs and pushers. To appeal to modern tastes, the designers increased the case to 39mm – a size that both men and women can comfortably wear.
The dial of the TAG Heuer Carrera Red Dial Limited Edition plays with textures, contrasting the sunray brushed face of the dial with recessed, snailed counters. Against this lush scarlet landscape, white markers, including the brand’s logo and model name, jump into crisp view. I just love the faceted, stepped hour markers that give the dial a 3D sculptural appearance. All indexes are rhodium-plated and contain a generous helping of Super-LumiNova®.
Heuer Red Dials
Red isn’t a new colour in TAG Heuer’s palette. The brand has used it several times over the years on logos and, most prominently, on the Monaco’s hour and minutes hands. The 1974 Heuer Silverstone had a blood red dial and, more recently, TAG Heuer released two red-faced, limited edition versions of the Monaco (2019 & 2020).
Where the red shade on the Silverstone had a relaxed and plucky vibe, the Carrera Limited Edition Red Dial brings a richer, more sophisticated hue to proceedings. The dial is truly gorgeous, a perfect example of the artistic design principles that Jack Heuer holds dear, all framed in a 39mm case. The crimson theme continues with the movement, with red accents on the column wheel and oscillating mass engravings – all on view through the screw-down sapphire case back. The Red Dial keeps pace with the in-house chronograph Calibre Heuer 02, a column wheel – vertical coupling ensemble, that serves up a generous 80 hours in the power reserve tank.
Encased in stainless steel, the TAG Heuer Carrera Red Dial Limited Edition distinguishes itself not only with that disarming scarlet dial, but also with an engraving on the case back that reads “Limited Edition” and “ONE OF 600”. The watch comes with a black alligator leather strap and steel folding clasp with double safety push buttons emblazoned with the HEUER logo.
The Red Dial is a wonderful evolution of the Carrera. It respects the heritage of TAG Heuer’s iconic chronograph while bringing in state-of-the-art mechanics and contemporary aesthetics. If that’s not enough to make you green red with envy, I don’t know what is.
