It is unknown whether the first repeating watch was invented by Edward Barlow or Daniel Quare, as they both claimed to be the pioneer of this watch complication during the 1680s. However, King James II intervened, asking the pair to each make him a repeating watch to be examined by his council. In 1687, the patent was awarded to Daniel Quare.
