Unlike annaul calendar timepieces, perpetual calendar watches automatically monitor the date, month, and year, without the need to be manually adjusted. This type of watch is extremely complex and beneath the dial lies hundreds of tiny mechanical parts. This usually consists of a date wheel, a date change lever, a day wheel and a day-of-the-week lever, as well as month wheels and racks in order to ensure all parts engage together and track time correctly.
The first perpetual calendar timepiece was made by English watchmaker, Thomas Mudge, in 1762. But, it wasn’t until 1923 that we saw the complication again, when Patek Phillipe graced the horlogerie world with the No. 97 975 wristwatch.
