The first sports watch was the Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso, created in 1931 to answer to a niche demand from athletic army officers who played Polo, the ideal sport for soldiers who needed to practice their horse-riding skills.

These types of timepieces soon became a hit, due to their practicality and high-quality movements. An ingenious solution from Jaeger-LeCoultre, the Reverso case had multiple parts, meaning the whole watch face could be turned over to protect the glass inside another steel outer case.
