Unveiled at Watches & Wonders 2026, the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin is the latest creation from the prestigious Maison founded in 1755. While its inventory of functions is limited to merely hours and minutes, the watch’s self-winding movement, the Calibre 2550, is incredibly complex. Angus Davies provides an introduction to the specification of this svelte exemplar of Haute Horlogerie.

In 2025, the Watches and Wonders Geneva Foundation reported 1600 journalists had attended the ‘salon’. But what does it mean to be a journalist operating within this esoteric industry? The answer is that the profession is composed of many individuals, invariably specialising in different aspects of watchmaking.

There are the industry commentators, discussing the appointment of new CEOs and poring over balance sheets. Likewise, there are the lifestyle journalists who tend to focus on aesthetics, designers and celebrity owners. There’s a small group of bookish types, often dwelling in the library, obsessing over brand heritage, able to recite historical dates on demand. And then, there are a number of confessed watch geeks, a diverse subset of which I am a paid-up member.

At this year’s Watches & Wonders, I will ‘touch and try’ a multitude of watches. Dashing from one meeting to the next, with a Canon mirrorless over my shoulder and a notepad and ballpoint in my hand, I’ll see a multitude of watches.

The routine is generally the same. It starts with a few niceties before the ‘novelties’ are revealed, one at a time. While the brand representative delivers the pitch, I will appraise the dial, looking for details. I will then examine the case execution, pawing the housing and bracelet, hunting for coarse surfaces or sharp edges. But ultimately, I gravitate to the movement and, while holding a loupe to my eye, I will immerse myself within a micro-mechanical world.

Similar to a petrolhead lifting the bonnet of a sports car and assessing its engine, I’m in my happy place when looking at a ratchet wheel and click. Is the watch hand wound or automatic? Does the movement feature raquette or is it equipped with a variable-inertia balance? How many barrels does it have? Is there a constant force mechanism? What about the rate stability? Is it COSC certified? Does it bear the Poinçon de Genève? What about finishing?

Eventually, I look up at my host and note they appear somewhat exhausted by incessant questions. However, this process of quizzing is essential if I am to fully assess a timepiece. Inevitably, some watches don’t pass muster (in my opinion) and I set them aside, preferring to write about those models I do admire.

Vacheron Constantin Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin – see before you ‘touch and try’

Having provided a brief insight into my 5-day sojourn in Geneva and the need to ‘touch and try’ numerous watches, I will now discuss a timepiece I have yet to see. Yes, that’s correct, the Canon mirrorless has not been used in anger and the notepad and ballpoint are still hibernating in my travel bag. Like many journalists, I receive details of new watches prior to launch ‘under embargo’ ie ‘blab and we’ll never speak to you again’.

Recently, Vacheron Constantin sent me details of the new Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin. While I’m a fan of the Overseas, I initially thought the watch was a ‘dial-animation’ (industry speak for an existing model with a different coloured dial). However, I noted that the press release was several pages long, hence I suspected there was possibly something I had missed. My suspicions were confirmed, I had overlooked that this watch is fitted with a remarkable ultra-thin movement. Allow me to elaborate.

Founded in 1755, Vacheron Constantin is often cited as a member of the ‘Holy Trinity’ of watchmaking, sat on high alongside Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe. Based in Geneva, Vacheron Constantin is synonymous with crafting high complications and it currently holds the record for making the world’s most complicated watch, the Berkley Grand Complication, comprising 63 horological complications and 2877 components.

With a reputation for making highly intricate expressions of Haute Horlogerie, brimming with functions, it may come as a surprise to learn that the new Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin merely displays the hours and minutes. However, as I will soon explain, the simplicity of this model’s dial belies the complexity within.

Similar to a Ferrari being associated with red, the dial of the Overseas is frequently presented in blue. The brand does offer versions in other shades, including the bewitching Overseas Tourbillon Titanium Deep Red, but for most horophiles, cerulean tones are the go-to choice. However, things may be about to change with the release of the new Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin with its salmon-lacquered dial. This hue has become increasingly popular within the watch world and with the advent of this eminently handsome model, it could well become the new default colour for Overseas buyers.

Formed of 18-carat white gold, the baton-style hour and minute hands are lined with white SLN, emitting a blue hue in restricted light. They collaborate with matching hour markers to announce the time in clear tones. The epidermis of the dial is adorned with a sunburst motif, while a ‘velvet-finished’ track, positioned on the flange, frames the dial.

The Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin may have a limited repertoire, singing merely the hours and minutes, but its performance is clear, crisp and simple to interpret.

Measuring 39.5 mm in diameter, the new Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin is modestly sized, while the case is formed of platinum, a noble metal that endows the housing with a whitish hue. These characteristics imbue the watch with tasteful restraint.

The beloved Overseas design language makes a welcome return. The crenellated bezel, inspired by the brand’s Maltese cross emblem, is highly polished and sits upon a brushed circular plinth, which in turn rests upon the case. This juxtaposing of satin-brushed and polished surfaces is repeated throughout and also extends to the platinum bracelet. With its ‘half Maltese cross-shaped polished and satin-brushed links’, the bracelet is attractively detailed with faceted edges that coax light.

Fitted with an ‘interchangeable’ bracelet, the owner can alter the appearance of their watch, swapping the bracelet for either a beige rubber strap or a dark beige alligator strap, without the need for tools. The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin is supplied with the bracelet and both straps as standard.

But ultimately, the headline act is unquestionably the model’s svelte torso. Measuring a mere 7.35 mm thick, the Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin delivers all the convenience of an automatic watch yet is slimmer than many hand-wound models. A feat of micro-mechanical engineering, the Ultra-Thin Manufacture Calibre 2550 is the reason for this slenderness, culminating in a watch made to limbo beneath a cuff.

According to Vacheron Constantin, the Calibre 2550 required ‘7 years of development’. This figure may sound excessive and you could be forgiven for thinking the great minds, the talented bunch working within Manufacture’s R&D Department, have been spending lots of time in the canteen, chatting about fondue and chocolate. That is, until you begin to look at its specification in more detail. Measuring just 2.4 mm in thickness, the movement features a micro-rotor and a double barrel and will run autonomously for 80 hours. Suddenly, the watch without complications seems very complex.

The movement features two superimposed barrels that pivot on a single post fixed to the barrel bridge, one stacked above the other. By adopting this approach, the Manufacture has been able to remove one of the barrel covers, mitigating overall thickness. The brand also goes on to explain, ‘As the winding torque is transmitted directly to the upper barrel while energy is delivered by the lower barrel to the finishing gear, the ratchet could also be eliminated.’ With both barrels arranged in series, coupled through their respective arbors, the configuration delivers ‘stable torque and therefore chronometric stability’.

Micro-rotor

While many automatic watches feature a full-size oscillating mass, Vacheron Constantin has endowed this movement with a bi-directional micro-rotor formed of 950 platinum, a noble metal also known for its high density. Using a diminutive rotor remains comparatively rare because of the technical challenge it presents. Put simply, it is difficult to generate sufficient inertia to energise a mainspring(s), merely by harvesting the energy from the natural motion of the wrist. However, by optimising the winding system and using an ultra-dense micro-rotor, Vacheron Constantin has surmounted this obstacle. Unlike a full-size oscillating mass that sits above the bridges, the micro-rotor sits within a recess, flush with neighbouring bridges, thereby mitigating movement thickness. Moreover, where a full-size oscillating mass can obscure the view of the movement decoration, the micro-rotor affords unhindered views of numerous finished components.

‘Single-lever gear train’

The brand has also arranged the gear train on one level, again reducing the depth or thickness of the calibre. But to achieve the Calibre 2550’s slender profile, the brand’s boffins have created a ‘five-wheel gear train’ when most watches feature four wheels. Moreover, two of the wheels are ‘mounted on ball bearings’, instead of the usual pivot and jewel arrangement.

Variable-inertia balance

Looking at other areas of the movement, I can see the Swiss marque has secured the balance with a bridge (affixed at two points) rather than using a cock (affixed at one point). This will enhance stability, something that is particularly important with an ultra-thin movement. Furthermore, the Calibre 2550 is equipped with a variable-inertia balance instead of the usual index-regulated balance. This means of regulation proffers superior precision and is less likely to require remedial regulation should the watch be subjected to a minor shock. Rather than using traditional screws to adjust the moment of inertia, and thereby the rate, the balance on this movement features masselottes, positioned on the interior of the balance wheel. This latter approach mitigates air turbulence, once again, augmenting precision.

Poinçon de Genève

The Vacheron Constantin Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin also bears the prestigious Hallmark of Geneva (aka the Poinçon de Genève). Independently audited by TimeLab, the ‘punch’ has been in existence since 1886 and is ‘synonymous with provenance, quality craftsmanship and reliability’. The Poinçon de Genève, which involves submitting technical dossiers for evaluation by TimeLab, requires that components are acceptable and that the production of watches adheres to the standard’s exacting requirements. Indeed, from milling a barquette to testing the accuracy of the watch over a 7 day period using a camera, nothing is left to chance.

Finissage

The requirements of the Poinçon de Genève state that ‘all machining marks must be eliminated. In addition, the most attractive decorations are used according to specific criteria’. The Maison states that the ‘Calibre 2550 benefits from hand-crafted finishing executed in the purest fine watchmaking tradition. The mainplate is circular-grained, while the bevelled bridges are decorated with Geneva stripes. The upper barrel drum is snailed, harmonising with the satin-finished barrel drum visible on the dial side. The wheels are sunburst-finished. The micro-rotor displays a circular satin finish around its periphery, an inner grained surface and a polished motif evoking a compass rose.’ Wherever you choose to look, you will see that every facet of the movement proves refined and blemish-free.

Closing remarks

At first glance, the Vacheron Constantin Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin appears simple and understated. It does not have numerous dial functions, there is an absence of gems gracing the bezel and the platinum case could easily be mistaken for steel.

However, take a closer look at this elegant timepiece. Note the dial’s subtle sunburst motif. Likewise, observe the juxtaposition of the polished and satin-brushed surfaces, crisp and discrete. The milling of the platinum case and bracelet, as well as their subsequent polishing, is more challenging than working with 316L, but luxury is invariably about surmounting such challenges. The resultant whitish appearance of the metal heightens its allure, justifying the additional effort expended.

But ultimately, all roads lead me to the movement, the Calibre 2550. It has clearly been conceived and crafted by a highly talented team, who have spent an inordinate amount of time trying to make a svelte movement that is not only automatic, but precise, reliable and beautiful to behold.

With Watches & Wonders around the corner, I look forward to getting hands-on with this model, holding a loupe to my eye and making notes with my notepad and ballpoint. No doubt some will call this professional geekiness, but it’s the type of journalism I tend to favour.
