Zeitwinkel 082° Watch Review
The Zeitwinkel 082° comes in three new dial variants from the brand that paradoxically seldom does new. The dial options include ‘glacier blue and galvanic silver’, ‘galvanic anthracite’ or ‘galvanic silver’. Each reference can be specified with a 39 mm or 42.5 mm case with either a calf leather or caoutchouc watch strap. US-based Meehna Goldsmith diplomatically navigates national stereotypes while providing the low-down on these latest products from Saint-Imier.
Zeitwinkel was founded in 2006
Zeitwinkel is a small, independent Swiss watch Manufacture with a decidedly German name. Once you have the pleasure of discovering the brand, you’ll see that everything, including the name, is done with purpose. While the addition of the Zeitwinkel 082° dials into the lineup might seem small, it is consequential, particularly when evolutions are so rare.
The company wasn’t established to resurrect a brand, cash in on a fad or fill what could be perceived as a market gap. In 2009, three friends embarked on a journey to make watches for themselves. And, when you’re crafting something for yourself, you don’t want to take shortcuts. They figured that after they had the product, they’d find like-minded watch lovers who appreciated them as well. Translated from German, Zeitwinkel means time angle and is derived from a measure for calculating ‘true local time’. According to the founders, the name provides incentive for the brand to build watches that are as precise as possible.
From its inception, the idea behind Zeitwinkel was to produce high-quality watches, honestly. That’s why the whole process would be completely transparent. There would be no need for the crossing of fingers behind backs when asked about a supplier, part construction or finishing technique. To this day, if you have a particular question, well, just shoot over an email and one of the founders will reply. No canned marketing speech or brand ‘guidelines’.
Zeitwinkel – Manufacture movements
Before Zeitwinkel started designing its watches, the founders were already looking beyond the horizon and thinking about movements, which had to be automatic. Off-the-shelf kits were a non-starter and modifying existing products was not acceptable to the brand’s perfectionist owners. Three years after establishing the brand, Zeitwinkel presented Manufacture calibres ZW0102 and ZW0103, designed, developed and manufactured in the Swiss Jura. Both options can run autonomously for 72 hours.
A notable feature of these movements is that they have a three-quarter plate and bridges made from untreated German Silver, an alloy of copper, nickel and zinc that is harder than brass. Over time, it develops a warm, lived-in hue that’s quite beautiful. Three-quarter plates are a characteristic of high-end German brands, such as Lange & Sohne. German silver can be a bear to work with because it’s a fingerprint magnet and decorative mistakes stand out like ugly blemishes on unmarred skin. But expedient and simple aren’t in Zeitwinkel’s playbook.
Zeitwinkel has never been in the limited edition game. It doesn’t believe in fanning the flames of envy by creating a scarcity mindset with colourway refreshes or co-branding. It doesn’t need to because its production size is already so small. Human hands can only work so fast. All Zeitwinkel watches are made-to-order and one watchmaker assembles the movement from start to finish.
Zeitwinkel 082° – new dial design
After 16 years, Zeitwinkel has decided to revisit the design of its original watches, so let’s lean in and find out what lies behind this reconsideration. The new dial on the Zeitwinkel 082° is constructed in three segments residing on different levels, not only increasing legibility but also adding interest and depth: a round central plate, featuring a 3D tapestry of the Zeitwinkel logo derived from its proprietary typeface; a broad ring underneath the numerals and indices, decorated with a structure of concentric circles working in harmony with the shadow of the appliques; and a narrow ring circling the perimeter for the minute markers. The Zeitwinkel typeface is galvanised in either ‘Black Or’ or ‘Silver’, and this update subtly gives a hat tip to the dial design used from 2009 to 2025.
Offered in three variants in either case size, the Zeitwinkel 082° comes in Galvanic Silver, Galvanic Anthracite and a striking combo of Glacier Blue and Galvanic Silver. By dividing the dial into different segments, it allows the brand to play more with materials, structure and colours.
Zeitwinkel 082° – Calibre ZW0102
Through the sapphire crystal caseback you can see the calibre ZW0102. Incidentally, it’s equipped with a ‘balance stop’ (hacking seconds), an essential ingredient to setting the time accurately and which takes extra finesse to execute. Decorations include Geneva Stripes and chamfered and polished edges of the three-quarter plate and bridges. Likewise, the screws are also chamfered and polished. If you are blessed with a keen eye, you may notice perlage, a series of overlapping surfaces gracing the mainplate and three-quarter plate. This intricate motif is painstakingly applied with great care and is a perfect example of Zeitwinkel’s pernicketiness. Although this model doesn’t provide a date, the calibre can include one in the future should the need arise.
Zeitwinkel 082° – case options
The Zeitwinkel 082° with centre seconds hand is offered in a choice of two case sizes: 39 mm or 42.5 mm. Both case options are executed in 1.4435 steel alloy, which is a glow-up version of the standard 316L stainless used on most timepieces. This alloy uses more molybdenum in the mix, which provides better pitting and corrosion resistance. In line with its sustainability principles, the brand no longer cases up watches in precious metals.

Zeitwinkel provides the option of a calf leather strap featuring an embossed alligator pattern or a natural caoutchouc strap. In keeping with sustainability principles, Zeitwinkel does not use real alligator straps. The adjustable clasp, composed of steel, comfortably secures the Zeitwinkel 082° to the wrist. Even the Zeitwinkel logos embossed on the inner side of the strap have a practical function, providing better ventilation for improved comfort.
Closing remarks
For a brand that builds in geological time rather than market cycles, the refreshed 082° is less a redesign than a raised eyebrow – proof that even the most disciplined Manufactures allow themselves a moment of levity. The subtle play of textures, the precise colour pairing, the quiet animation of the seconds hand and the curvature of the Saint Imier mark above 6 o’clock: together they introduce a softness, almost a smile, without disturbing the watch’s fundamental seriousness. It’s just enough to let you know the watch is not only measuring time, but also enjoying it.
