Best Couples Watches

Our Best Couples Watches Reviewed

In the 18th century, English and Swiss watchmakers began exporting timepieces to China. These so-called ‘Chinese’ watches did not subscribe to Chinese themes but remained European in style, influenced by Louis XV, Louis XV1 Directoire and Empire styles. Polychrome enamel painting and cases framed with pearls were typical of this horological genre.

Pocket watches were nearly always sold in pairs, often with the scene on one watch dial being mirrored on its near-identical twin. There are many theories as to the reason for the watches being sold in pairs. Perhaps the most plausible reasons often cited include the Chinese love of symmetry as well as the nation’s fondness for even numbers. The most favoured scenes were romantic in nature, hence it could be argued these were some of the earliest forms of ‘couples watches’.

In recent times, many couples select ‘his and hers’ watches as an expression of their love for one another. Sometimes purchased to mark a milestone, such as a significant anniversary, a pair of watches may be considered a metaphor for two hearts beating in unison.

Historically, women’s watches have typically been smaller than those affixed to male wrists; however, thankfully, such crass stereotypes are a thing of the past with many females preferring ‘gent’s watches’ to so-called ‘ladies’ timepieces’.

Usually, couples watches share a close resemblance to one another, albeit sometimes, setting aside the thorny issue of size, they differ in terms of complications and/or the presence of gems. Below, breaking with tradition, I’ve listed three watches, available in different sizes, that would make ideal options for star-crossed lovers seeking ticking tokens of shared affection.

Vacheron Constantin Overseas self-winding 35 mm

Girard-Perregaux Laureato 42 mm Green

First released in 1975 as quartz-powered sports watch, the Laureato collection has grown in size and now encompasses several references fitted with mechanical movements, some of which are endowed with high complications.

  • The case is an elaborate combination of shapes. The octagonal bezel sits atop a circular plinth which in turn rests upon a tonneau-shape case.
  • Traditionalists may favour the Clous de Paris dial; however, the Onyx dial is beautiful to behold.
  • The Laureato is available in an array of sizes, dial colours as well as gem-set options.

  • The Tonda PF Micro-Rotor is housed in a 40 mm case, making it suitable for both male and female wrists

  • An alternative option for ladies yearning diamonds is the Tonda PF Automatic Rose Gold Deep Ruby with diamond indexes. Housed in a 36mm rose gold case, the watch will suit smaller wrists. In addition, the model also won the GPHG Ladies’ Watch Prize in 2022 (see image below)
