The Glashütte Original Serenade Luna demonstrates that a lady doesn’t have to sacrifice mechanical substance at the altar of aesthetic beauty. Bathed in captivating ‘Skyline Blue’ mother-of-pearl and framed in polished steel, its 32.5 mm diamond-set case plays host to the purposely made in-house Calibre 35, a wonderfully refined automatic movement.

For many years, a persistent myth has clouded the world of luxury watchmaking. Complex mechanical movements were deemed a purely masculine interest, leading the industry to treat women’s watches with a disappointing lack of technical ambition. The prevailing formula was simply to take a man’s watch, shrink the case, replace the beating mechanical heart with a quartz movement and simply add a liberal dusting of diamonds. Thankfully, the discerning female collector of today rightly demands much more than that. She seeks the sweeping glide of a mechanical seconds hand and expects to turn a watch over and be met with an in-house calibre, resplendent with traditional decoration. Indeed, she should be able to form that same tangible daily connection to the centuries-old art of micro-engineering as any man does. To my mind, the joy of interacting with a mechanical heart is a universal pleasure that should know no gender.
While some brands continue to miss the mark, Glashütte Original is one watchmaker that recognises a woman’s timepiece deserves to stand entirely on its own merit rather than merely representing a watered-down version of its male counterpart. The latest example from the brand is the Serenade Luna Skyline Blue. This stunning timepiece dismantles the outdated boundaries between men’s and women’s Haute Horlogerie with its in-house automatic calibre sitting beneath a radiant blue dial, proving that mechanical sophistication is genderless.
Glashütte Original – a history of celestial complications
Tracing its lineage from the elegant Lady Serenade to the beautifully asymmetric PanoMatic Luna, Glashütte Original has long championed the belief that women’s timepieces should stand as proud equals to their masculine stablemates. Inverting one of these cases reveals a secret landscape of Sachsen artistry. Abundant in traditional flourishes, from crisp Glashütte ribbing and perlage to sunburst finish and thermally blued screws, excellence is manifest throughout.
The same can be said for the latest Serenade Luna watch, which pairs expert gem-setting with superlative German engineering. Within a diamond-haloed bezel, a large moon phase display cleverly obscures and reveals the moon’s surface, using four lunar spheres that work harmoniously together, replicating the waxing crescent against a delicate blue mother-of-pearl dial. This celestial feature is the latest chapter in a story that has long been woven into the very fabric of Glashütte Original. The moon phase complication has been part of the company’s identity since 2007, with the PanoMaticLunar and the Senator Excellence immediately coming to mind. In 2024, Glashütte Original released a new model, the Serenade Luna, offered in four variants (Escapement wrote about it at the time). This watch featured a new automatic movement, the Calibre 35-14. The new Serenade Luna Skyline Blue builds on this story with its glorious cerulean-hued dial.

The dial of the new Glashütte Original Serenade Luna Skyline Blue is executed in a wafer-thin slice of mother-of-pearl. Notoriously unforgiving to work with, the material achieves its ‘Skyline Blue’ colour through a highly ingenious multi-layered technique. First, artisans at the Manufactory apply several coats of dark lacquer to the back of the lustrous canvas, giving it an iridescent sheen in natural light and a dramatic, smoky blue in others. The effect brilliantly mimics the glazed facades of a towering city skyscraper and the passage of clouds that reflect in its surfaces.
This celestial surface is further elevated by the application of brilliant-cut diamond hour markers that have each been set by the steady hand of a highly skilled artisan. At each location, the double-diamond formations are set into 18ct white gold, save for 5 and 7 o’clock where individual diamonds flank the moon phase display. Speaking of the moon phase display, this is where the Maison delivers the most artistic representation of the night sky. The moon disc nestles within a grooved hour track, crafted in matching mother-of-pearl. Exhibiting a three-dimensional allure, the disc is adorned with four lacquered circles, each taking its turn to portray a nocturnal sky. The moon appears within the aperture, set against a backdrop of subtly shimmering white gold stars, evoking the nocturnal scene as it appears in the night sky. Consistent with other members of the Serenade Luna collection, the Skyline Blue is fitted with elegant feuille hour and minute hands and a seconds hand endowed with an infinity-shaped counterweight.

Measuring 32.5 mm in diameter, the case of the Glashütte Original Serenade Luna Skyline Blue is optimally sized for a slender female wrist. Equally as delicate as it is robust, the watch is housed in a practical stainless steel case, adorned with a bewitching bezel set with 48 diamonds. Promising notable versatility, the Serenade Luna Skyline Blue will look just as at home amidst the formal rigours of the boardroom as it would paired with a classic little black dress.
A further delight awaits in the tactile engagement with the winding crown. Set with a scintillating rose-cut diamond, this charming detail transforms the simple act of setting the time into a wholly indulgent interaction.
To complement the timepiece, there is a choice of a stainless steel bracelet with a double folding clasp or a midnight blue Louisiana alligator leather strap.
Glashütte Original Serenade Luna Skyline Blue – movement
The in-house automatic Calibre 35-14 can be seen through the sapphire crystal exhibition caseback. It has a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz) and features a balance spring formed from silicon, a lightweight material that is resistant to the potentially harmful effects of magnetism and temperature, as well as offering enhanced precision. Furthermore, the movement will run autonomously for 60 hours, allowing the wearer to remove the watch on a Friday evening, knowing it will remain perfectly on time come Monday morning.
Upholding Glashütte watchmaking tradition, the movement is fitted with a three-quarter plate, embellished with a stripe finish. Moreover, the reduction wheel features a sunburst finish and thermally blued screws sit snugly within chamfered sinks. The crowning glory, however, is the solid gold oscillating mass, adorned with a delicate shell-like pattern intended to mimic the drawing back of theatre curtains to reveal the movement centre stage.
One might reasonably expect such a generously proportioned lunar display to result in a rather cumbersome profile. Yet, the German marque has masterfully integrated the complication into the Calibre 35-14, mitigating the movement’s thickness to a remarkably svelte 3.8 mm. Consequently, the case measures an elegantly slender 8.9 mm, bestowing the Serenade Luna Skyline Blue with neat proportions.
Closing thoughts
Women’s timepieces should never convey mechanical complexity as an afterthought. The Glashütte Original Serenade Luna makes a point of this by skilfully bridging the divide between haute joaillerie and rigorous mechanical engineering. The shimmering Skyline blue dial, with its captivating moon phase display, sits in concert with a beautifully engineered in-house calibre, showing that beautiful aesthetics, with the tasteful addition of precious stones, does not necessitate forgoing mechanical excellence and day-to-day practicality.
