Chopard Happy Diamonds

I’ll admit that in my younger years, I gave little thought to the passage of time and rarely paused to appreciate the simple pleasure of watching objects move freely, unrestrained and fluid in motion. Much like a child, wide-eyed and fascinated as a magician releases a white dove from his coat, there is a deep sense of wonderment when witnessing the uninhibited motion of Chopard’s dancing diamonds.

In 1976, the Swiss Maison unveiled a series of watches featuring Happy Diamonds. Nearly 20 years later, in 1993, Caroline Scheufele, Co-President and Artistic Director of Chopard, created the Happy Sport. This contemporary watch, featuring floating, playful diamonds sandwiched between two panes of sapphire crystal, has proved a huge commercial success for the family-run firm. Indeed, the brand has equipped numerous expressions of jewellery and watches with the animated gems.

Today, the luxury brand’s spirited diamonds make a return, dancing within the new Chopard Happy Hearts 33 mm, the latest addition to the Maison’s Happy Sport collection.

Chopard Happy Hearts 33 mm – case

The brilliance of the Happy Sport watch collection is in the masterful way it simultaneously exudes both luxury and casual elegance. The same can be said for this new Happy Hearts iteration. Measuring 33 mm in diameter and 10.84 mm in height, the case is optimally sized for the female wrist and is imbued with both balance and harmony. What’s more, the use of steel grounds the dial’s ethereal character, making it perfectly suited for daily wear.

In its ‘journey to sustainable luxury’, Chopard has sought to rethink the materials it uses for making jewellery and watches. Mitigating the impact on the environment, the brand sources gold from small, artisanal mines. As part of this responsible approach, Chopard also began using its proprietary Lucent Steel in 2019. Having been smelted twice, this premium steel is exceptionally pure and, comprising a minimum of 90% recycled steel, it is also very sustainable. Boasting a brilliant, whitish appearance, Lucent Steel is 50% harder than conventional steel, enhancing its scratch resistance. It is also hypoallergenic. Defined by softly rounded flanks and a smooth, polished bezel, the case architecture exudes grace, while drawing the eye instinctively towards the dial’s kinetic dance. The crown features a gently crimped edge and its vertical flank is punctuated with a soupçon of colour, contrasting with the monochromatic steel housing.

Fitted with a denim strap, this feminine watch adapts to any stylish ensemble. Rarely does a material of such humble origin sit so convincingly against a dial of such refined elegance, yet here the pairing proves perfectly on point.

Chopard Happy Hearts 33 mm – dial

The dial of every Happy Hearts timepiece is characterised by its expressive, interactive appearance. Held securely in a void between two sheets of virtually invisible, anti-reflective sapphire crystal, the brand’s signature dancing elements enjoy freedom of movement, delivering a spirited spectacle.

Three diamonds pirouette in the light, joined by two exquisitely crafted dancing hearts. Animating these roaming elements speaks volumes about Chopard’s clever engineering. Because a diamond sits at the absolute pinnacle of the Mohs hardness scale, a loose stone would undoubtedly scratch and obliterate the sapphire crystal over time. To prevent this from happening, Chopard’s dedicated artisans, affectionately termed ‘choreographers’, meticulously house each gem and heart within an 18ct ethical white gold setting. Fashioned with a highly polished, softly bevelled base that resembles a child’s spinning top, the structure acts as a protective bumper, allowing the stones to glide, rotate and reflect light without ever tipping over or abrading their transparent cage.

Floating in a mesmerising, entirely unscripted way, above the traditional timekeeping indications, the diamonds and mother-of-pearl hearts (one white, one pink-purple) bring the dial to life. To ensure this visual theatre never tips into chaos, Chopard has wisely chosen a shimmering white mother-of-pearl dial, upon which a blue transferred railway minute track, rhodium-coated Roman numeral hour markers and elegant sword-shaped hands sit.

Chopard Happy Hearts 33 mm – the movement

Chopard ensures that the captivating exterior of the Happy Hearts 33 mm is matched by an equally considered mechanical execution. Hidden beneath the exhibition caseback, adorned with the Happy Sport logo, beats the Chopard Calibre 09.01-C. This self-winding, mechanical movement was developed entirely in-house. Operating at a frequency of 25,200 vph (3.5 Hz), the movement comprises 148 components and has a power reserve of 42 hours.

Closing Thoughts

The Chopard Happy Hearts 33 mm takes one of earth’s most precious treasures and presents it in a watch, seamlessly integrated within steel, a utilitarian and ubiquitous material. Indeed, it is this and other contrasting elements that make this watch so compelling. Coveted and accessible, dressy and casual, luxurious yet practical, this model not only fulfils a functional role, it confers joy with every momentary glance.
