The Minerva The Unveiled Crownless is a novel creation that marks the historic Villeret manufacture’s structural separation from Montblanc to become a standalone haute horlogerie brand once more. The watch features a highly innovative bezel-operated ‘crownless’ design and proudly bears the historic Minerva signature on its dial, reviving one of Swiss watchmaking’s most deeply respected names.

Famous for its beautifully hand-finished chronographs, Minerva remains a true champion of traditional watchmaking. Though operating under the custodianship of Montblanc, it is still regarded as one of the world’s finest watchmakers. Indeed, while Minerva has weathered the turbulence of world wars, navigated the fickle winds of changing tastes and seen various owners come and go since its inception in 1858, it has remained steadfastly rooted to its original workshops in Villeret. I dare say, any devoted enthusiast would gladly part with a small fortune just to spend an afternoon exploring the forgotten archives of the brand’s attics. After all, this is the same atelier that crafted rugged service watches for the military and highly precise pocket chronographs used to time the test flights of Lockheed fighter jets.

Acquired by the Richemont Group in 2006, the Maison spent the following two decades producing exquisite, double-signed creations that sat at the absolute pinnacle of Montblanc’s horological offering. Now, twenty years post-acquisition and guided by Laurent Lecamp, the Global Managing Director of Montblanc, the prestigious name Minerva has been revived, returning it to its once elevated status as a stand-alone brand. While Minerva will maintain close ties with Montblanc, the 2026 collection marks a new era of independence. To celebrate, Minerva is offering a suite of new high-end chronographs alongside a completely novel creation, the Unveiled Crownless.

Minerva The Unveiled Crownless – case

There is something about the absence of a traditional winding crown that completely transforms the visual character of a timepiece. Deprived of this familiar protrusion, the eye is no longer drawn off-centre. Instead, the composition feels poised, symmetrical and beautifully restrained. The Minerva Unveiled Crownless leans fully into this symmetry. An 18ct rose gold fluted bezel sits atop a 41.5 mm stainless steel case, granting a sublime blend of cool silvery tones and warm blush pink reflections.

Minerva has a rich lineage of bezel-activated complications, dating back to 1927 when it produced military aviation pieces that allowed pilots to easily manipulate internal timing rings with glove-clad hands. Building upon the bezel-actuated chronograph introduced with the 2023 Unveiled Timekeeper, the bezel of the Unveiled Crownless facilitates manual winding of the mainspring as well as setting the prevailing hours and minutes. Every element, from the downward-reaching chamfered lugs to the 12 mm case thickness, has been thoughtfully considered for ease of use, albeit on this occasion with slightly dressier intentions.

Cleverly, the mechanism to switch between these two functions is well hidden. A small lever nestles discreetly within the stainless steel frame of the sapphire caseback. When pushed in, the wearer is able to turn the bezel to wind the watch. When extended, the bezel adjusts the hands. Highly tactile and deeply engaging, Minerva has designed this system for purists who cherish the daily ritual of hand-winding a watch, while at the same time preserving the clean, unbroken lines of the case.

Minerva The Unveiled Crownless – dial

Beneath the sapphire crystal, the dial of the Unveiled Crownless takes inspiration from an historical Minerva watch of the 1950s. The iconic Minerva logo resides in the upper region of the dial, while a recessed small seconds display is positioned at 6 o’clock and acts as a counterbalance to said branding. An applied, rose-gold-coated Arabic ’12’ sits at the top of the dial, while faceted indexes denote the remaining hours.

Golden Dauphine-style hour and minute hands circle the display. The central sector of the dial is finished in a delicate opaline, providing a subtle contrast with the neighbouring guilloché hour track. Should the wearer tilt their wrist, the opaline centre, engraved periphery and warm metallic accents all spring to life, yielding a surface of shifting tones of light and shade. Meanwhile, the framing bezel remains a constant source of intrigue, with light dipping and dancing through its grooves, revealing a wealth of sculptural depth.

Minerva presents the watch on a semi-matt dark green alligator leather strap, paired with a newly designed triple folding deployant clasp featuring a practical fine-adjustment system. In a wonderful celebration of its heritage, the clasp is engraved with the historic Minerva arrow.

Minerva Manufacture Calibre M15.08

Since creating a bezel-wound timepiece requires far more than simply modifying an existing movement, Minerva started with a blank canvas. The result is the Calibre M15.08, a manually wound, time-only movement conceived and executed entirely in-house in Villeret. It’s a deeply traditional engine, beating at a relaxed cadence of 18,000 vibrations per hour (2.5Hz) and, thanks to a generously sized mainspring, runs autonomously for 80 hours.

The sapphire caseback grants an unhindered view of the mechanical landscape, comprising 139 beautifully finished components. The curvaceous bridges, crafted from German silver and plated with rhodium, feature sweeping lines, flawlessly polished bevels and glorious Côtes de Genève decoration. Precision is enhanced with the fitment of a free-sprung balance, while the regulator is endowed with the signature Minerva arrow.

True luxury extends all the way to the packaging. The Minerva Unveiled Crownless is presented in a handsome natural walnut-veneer box, featuring a secret opening system that bestows a sense of theatre. The lid is adorned with a stainless steel plate, engraved with the Villeret manufacture and the historic RFV (Robert Frères Villeret) logo. Even the latch pays respect to the brand’s origins, displaying the official coat of arms of Villeret.
