The Panerai Luminor Marina PAM01707 combines the iconic sandwich dial with an ultralight and resistant carbon composite case. The resultant watch respects Panerai’s patrimony with its Italianate style while also demonstrating the brand is not afraid of adopting cutting-edge technology when it confers advancement.
Just a few years ago, I discovered a newfound reverence for the open water. Cladding myself in a thick neoprene wetsuit and wading into the bracing coastal swell, I found a world free of the bothersome noise that accompanies modern-day life. Beneath the surface, everything is reduced to cold currents and muted light. Without the rhythmic sound of your own breathing to punctuate the silence, the open water remains a daunting frontier, one where absolute, unwavering faith in your instruments becomes paramount. Whether amongst the waves or enjoying the stillness of an open water swim, you are entirely reliant on the kit you carry. It is the same mandate that led to Panerai creating its first prototype divers’ watch for the Royal Italian Navy in 1935. The new Luminor Marina PAM01707 pays tribute to the Italian-Swiss firm’s past, while still propelling the company towards an advanced, carbon-fibre-infused future.

The Luminor Marina collection is the bedrock upon which the modern Panerai firm rests and has become renowned for its imposing, masculine physique, often fitted with a useful small seconds dial at 9 o’clock. The Panerai PAM01707 takes the emblematic blueprint of the 1960s that first inspired the Luminor and executes it in Carbotech. According to Panerai, ‘the manufacturing process of Carbotech involves compressing carbon fibres at a precise temperature and high pressure along with PEEK (Polyether Ether Ketone), a superior polymer that reinforces the composite, enhancing its strength and longevity.’ The inclusion of PEEK alone is crucial from an engineering standpoint. This high-performance thermoplastic is renowned in aerospace and medical engineering for its mechanical stability and thermal resistance.
The PAM01707 has a total mass of approximately 100 grams, a remarkably low figure for a watch measuring 44 mm in diameter with a thickness of 14.5 mm. This impressive achievement helps reduce the top-heavy wobble that often plagues tool watches of comparable size. The black matte surface, uneven and organic in its grain-like structure, grants a wonderful tactility and a characterful appearance. Furthermore, no two cases ever share the same striations due to the forging process, granting a degree of individuality.
A sapphire crystal is positioned front of house, while to the rear, the luxury marque has equipped the watch with a closed, DLC-coated titanium caseback. Water-resistant to 300 metres, the Luminor Marina PAM01707 will fulfil the needs of most would-be wearers (and freshwater swimmers) and serves to perpetuate Panerai’s reputation for robustness and durability.
It would be remiss to speak of any Luminor without mentioning its crown-protecting bridge, a functional device that has since become a brand signature beloved by the ‘Paneristi’. It was originally developed to meet the rigorous specifications of the Royal Italian Navy, ensuring absolute water resistance without relying on a traditional threaded crown. Instead, it uses an integrated cam-lever mechanism that, when closed, exerts pressure, pushing the crown tightly against the internal seals of the case tube. Furthermore, the bridge serves as an impenetrable physical shield against lateral shocks. On the PAM01707, the mechanism is executed in dark, matte Carbotech, matching the bezel and case middle.

Panerai has respected the historical Luminor design, adopting the brand’s famous sandwich dial construction and executing it in a wonderfully restrained matte black finish. The solid lower plate is coated with beige Super-LumiNova that peeps through the various apertures cut into the upper dial membrane. These apertures include lozenge-shaped indexes and Arabic numerals at the cardinal points. The apertures also extend to the small seconds display where they are presented in miniature form. In restricted light, the beige Super-LumiNova produces a green emission. Many purists will welcome the company’s decision to omit the customary date window, appreciating the cleaner, minimalist look typical of the firm’s early naval commissions. The Italian-Swiss marque has chosen to retain the small seconds display, positioned at 9 o’clock, again a decision that will meet with the approval of the Paneristi. In 1956, when Panerai created the legendary GBF-2/56 for the Egyptian Navy, it included a small seconds display at 9 o’clock. This served as a means of indicating to the diver that the watch was operational. It remains a useful indication and animates an otherwise pure and uncluttered vista.
Panerai Luminor Marina PAM01707 – movement
The PAM01707 is powered by the automatic Calibre P.9010, a movement ‘conceived to support everyday reliability, practicality, and autonomy’. Composed of 200 individual parts, including
31 jewels, it measures 6.0 mm in thickness and operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz). The regulating organ is supported by a balance bridge, fixed at both sides, providing superior stability. Equipped with two series-connected spring barrels, the movement will run autonomously for 3 days (72 hours).
Consistent with the brand’s military heritage, the Calibre P.9010 is equipped with a stop-seconds feature that halts the balance wheel when the crown is pulled out for precise synchronisation with fellow divers. In addition, the watch is equipped with an independent quick time-change function, allowing the wearer to move the hour hand in either direction in precise one-hour steps without altering the position of the minute hand or interrupting timekeeping.
The PAM01707 comes fitted with a supple, warm brown vintage calf leather strap trimmed with contrasting beige stitching that harmonises beautifully with the dial’s luminescent markers. It secures to the wrist with a trapezoidal pin buckle crafted from titanium and is dressed in a black DLC coating, matching the titanium caseback. Recognising that leather has no place in deep water, Panerai also includes an additional black rubber strap along with a screwdriver for simple strap changes. When worn on the rubber strap, the personality of the PAM01707 shifts instantly from a vintage-inspired luxury piece to a tactical dive tool, ready for immersion.
Closing Thoughts
With the Panerai Luminor Marina PAM01707, the company has shown that respecting one’s heritage doesn’t require living in the past. Indeed, it clearly demonstrates the wisdom of drawing on amassed know-how, embracing new materials and crafting tool watches that meet the needs of those who venture underwater, all delivered with the brand’s Italianate flair.
