Seiko Presage Classic × TRADMAN’S BONSAI HCC009J1 Watch Review
Seiko has long been admired for combining reliable engineering, impressive craftsmanship and Japanese cultural influences. These characteristics are once again manifest in the brand’s latest creation, the Seiko Presage Classic × TRADMAN’S BONSAI HCC009J1 – a watch that showcases Japan’s fondness for nature.

Limited to 2,000 pieces, the Seiko Presage Classic × TRADMAN’S BONSAI HCC009J1 takes inspiration from the Japanese art of Bonsai and, in this particular instance, the glimmer of a black pine bathed in moonlight. The combination of its deep green dial and gold-tone case endows the watch with a distinctive appearance, likely to hold the onlooker’s gaze the moment they see it. The dial’s textured epidermis augments the model’s allure with its captivating play with light. The model is a welcome addition to the Presage Classic Series, drawing on traditional Japanese influences, culminating in an aesthetic that feels both elegant and contemporary.
Seiko Presage Classic × TRADMAN’S BONSAI HCC009J1 – dial
Without question, the dial is the principal attraction of the HCC009J1. Finished in matsuba-iro, a traditional Japanese colour associated with green pine tree needles, the hue provides an unusual and attractive alternative to the mainstream black, white and blue dials that have become the staples of the watch industry. Despite green becoming increasingly popular in recent years, this particular pine-themed shade delivers a very distinctive look.

However, the appeal of this model is more than its dial colour alone. The surface is enriched with an embossed pattern, resembling the textured bark of an ageing tree. This intricate treatment imbues the dial with an abundance of character, with various states of light and shadow revealing different aspects of the pattern with just a subtle rotation of the wrist. Rather than relying on an elaborate complication or an abundance of decorative elements, Seiko has chosen to make the dial’s colour and texture the centrepiece.
The gold-tone hour markers and hands provide attractive contrast against the darker background and work in concert with the gold-coloured case and bracelet. According to the brand, their warm appearance recalls the moonlight illuminating the branches of a Japanese black pine. The resultant watch proves handsome and distinctive without appearing unduly flamboyant.
Seiko Presage Classic × TRADMAN’S BONSAI HCC009J1 – case and bracelet
Formed from stainless steel, the case measures 38 mm in diameter with a thickness of 12.9 mm. These dimensions should suit the majority of wrists, tastefully sidestepping excess while at the same time providing sufficient room to showcase the dial’s beautifully textured surface. The steel case and bracelet are coated in gold PVD; however, unlike the yellow gold shade widely seen, this treatment is almost ‘champagne’ in colour, conferring a nuanced tone that I find especially appealing.

Consistent with several other Presage references, the HCC009J1 is presented on a seven-row bracelet. In addition, the watch is supplied with a black calfskin leather strap, allowing the wearer to adapt the look of the model when the occasion demands. The model looks equally attractive whether it’s worn on a bracelet or strap. The bracelet endues the HCC009J1 with a jewellery-like appearance, whereas the leather strap is understated and traditional. My only slight disappointment is the lack of a user-friendly system for swapping the bracelet/strap without the need for tools.

The underside of the leather strap features an embossed sanko-matsu pine needle motif, repeating the bonsai theme. It’s a small feature that could easily be overlooked, but it demonstrates Seiko’s impressive attention to detail.
An exhibition case back grants a view of the mechanical movement within and bears an engraved limited-edition inscription and unique serial number.
Seiko Presage Classic × TRADMAN’S BONSAI HCC009J1 – movement
The HCC009J1 is powered by Seiko’s tried and tested Calibre 6R51, an automatic movement featuring 24 jewels. It will run autonomously for approximately 72 hours when fully wound.
Closing remarks
The HCC009J1 proves a welcome addition to the Presage Classic Series. Its appeal shows that a watch does not always require complicated mechanisms or extravagant proportions to capture the imagination. The carefully considered combination of colour, texture and traditional Japanese symbolism has delivered a fresh and interesting timepiece that has its own personality yet remains a recognisable member of the Presage family.

Once again, Seiko has successfully combined reliable engineering, impressive craftsmanship and Japanese cultural influences in a watch that delivers an extraordinary quality-price ratio and a captivating aesthetic.
