Carl F. Bucherer Patravi ScubaTec Verde Watch Review
The Carl F. Bucherer Patravi ScubaTec Verde is a divers’ watch fitted with a unidirectional steel/ceramic bezel and a helium valve. It is also water-resistant to 500 metres. The highly legible dial is presented in a bewitching shade of green and adorned with a wave motif. Beyond the model’s practical benefits and handsome appearance, it also raises funds for a worthwhile cause.

Barely a day goes by without the environment being mentioned in the media. The plight of the planet is at the forefront of many minds. Freak weather, poor air quality and animal extinction are just some of the consequences of using fossil fuels and deforesting vast swathes of land.

Since 2013, the Lucerne-based firm, Carl F. Bucherer has played its part in protecting the biodiversity of the world’s oceans by supporting the Manta Trust. Based in the UK, the Manta Trust is a charity that ‘shares and promotes knowledge and expertise’. Moreover, it states its mission is to ‘conserve mobulid rays, their relatives, and their habitats, through a combination of research, education and collaboration’.
Carl F. Bucherer is fully funding a team of researchers from the Manta Trust and Proyecto Mantas Ecuador to visit Isla de La Plata, a small island, just 17 miles off the coast of Ecuador. The area is home to the world’s largest-known population of oceanic manta rays and this month it will host the team of researchers as they measure, photograph and tag the huge aquatic creatures, the largest manta ray species.

Over the years, Carl F. Bucherer has produced several Patravi ScubaTec models in support of the Manta Trust. This year, the Swiss marque has unveiled a new version of its divers’ watch, presented in a stunning shade of green.
Aptly named the Carl F. Bucherer Patravi ScubaTec Verde, the watch is endowed with a wave motif. Recently, I had the opportunity to wear the model and I can attest it is stunning. Beyond its aesthetic charms, the dial is simple to read, courtesy of its bold luminescent hands and prominent hour markers.

Housed in a stainless steel case measuring 44.6 mm in diameter, the CFB model looks and feels much smaller when affixed to the wrist due to its short lugs. Fitted with a green unidirectional steel and ceramic bezel, marked with a count-up scale, and a helium valve, the ScubaTec Verde is unequivocally a divers’ watch. It is also water-resistant to 500 metres, making it an ideal companion for subaquatic activities. The watch is presented on a green rubber strap, featuring ‘a textile inlay made from recycled PET’.

At the heart of the watch sits the automatic CFB 1950.1 caliber, a chronometer-certified movement (COSC). The caseback of the movement is adorned with a depiction of two manta rays beneath the waves.

Recently, while attending a CFB event in Munich, I tried on the watch for size and was mightily impressed. It fulfils all practical considerations but also looks gorgeous. In addition, considering the quality of its construction, the watch represents excellent value at £5500 (RRP as of 23.8.2023)
The brand states that it is ‘donating a portion of each timepiece’s retail value directly to the charity’ (the Manta Trust). While some commentators may dismiss this initiative as merely a promotional strategy, I personally think Carl F. Bucherer’s actions are commendable. After all, there is much discussion about the planet, but sadly not enough people are willing to do anything about it.
