Frederique Constant Classic Power Reserve Big Date Manufacture Watch Review
The Frederique Constant Classic Power Reserve Big Date Manufacture features the Geneva-based brand’s 31st Manufacture calibre. The dial is equipped with a moon phase, a power-reserve indication and a big date. And yet, despite its complexity, the display remains eminently clear and simple to understand. Angus Davies explains why this watch is ideally suited to those would-be wearers who lack 20/20 vision.
Frederique Constant Watch
The incapacity to hear things becomes an inherent problem when you get older. Once every sound was delivered in crystal-clear Dolby 5.1; however, with the advent of grey hair, life’s soundtrack resembles a mono LP of yesteryear with accompanying crackles and hiss. Likewise, age-related myopia sees sufferers, once with 20/20 vision, struggle to focus on those objects too far away. You can spot sufferers in your midst, they carry a collection of spectacles to cover all eventualities.
I struggle with presbyopia, a problem most sufferers counter by employing telescopic arms, eager to bring objects into focus. It is sometimes referred to as ‘Long-arm syndrome’.
The reason for my convoluted introduction is that for those horophiles north of 40, readability assumes greater importance. Hands and indexes need to convey information free of ambiguity. Additional functions are desirable, but they are only of value if the reader can decipher what they are intended to show.
In 2023, Frederique Constant released a watch that not only proclaims the prevailing time as well as the date in widescreen format but also the moon phase and the status of the mainspring in a highly intelligible form. However, while this watch is ideally suited to bespectacled wearers, it is also very suitable to those prospective purchasers blessed with perfect vision. Allow me to elaborate.
Frederique Constant Classic Power Reserve Big Date dial
The Frederique Constant Classic Power Reserve Big Date Manufacture is offered in four variants, each with an optimally hued dial designed to complement the chosen case material. The case options include steel, rose gold and platinum. In this instance, I have elected to focus on the steel variants which are offered with a choice of blue or silver dials.
When contrasting the silver dial with its blue counterpart, it seems more classical. Personally speaking, I prefer the blue dial, perhaps a sign that I am desperately trying to cling to my youth. Both dial options are attractive and both feature sunray finishing.

Lancine-style hour and minute hands lucidly convey meaning. A lithe central sweep seconds hand circumnavigates the dial. The lack of a chemin de fer or track precludes measuring the passing of each second; however, it does result in the display appearing clean and refreshingly unfussy. The faceted and gleaming, lachrymose-themed indexes denote the hours. A generously-proportioned crescent-shaped aperture, located above 6 o’clock, reveals the moonphases.
An arcing track, positioned between 8 and 10 o’clock, shows the available energy held within the spring barrel. Should the power-reserve’s lone hand point to the crimson-toned area, adjacent to 8 o’clock, the wearer knows the watch is devoid of energy and needs to be manually wound. Conversely, if the hand is pointing northwards, almost kissing the index at 10 o’clock, it is clear, the mainspring is fully tensioned and the watch will run autonomously for 50 hours. What distinguishes this display as praiseworthy is that it conveys information in a highly legible format without marring the model’s eminently elegant mien.

A large date display resides between 2 and 3 o’clock, opposite the power-reserve display. Unlike a conventional date display that employs one disc, orbiting the dial and imparting meaning via a small aperture, the ‘Big Date’ is a far more complicated mechanism. It employs two smaller date discs, one for tens and a second for units. Both numbers are presented in delineated form, outlined with a gleaming silver-coloured frame. The benefit of this type of display is that it presents the prevailing date in macro-view.
Frederique Constant Classic Power Reserve Big Date case
Irrespective of the case material selected, all models measure 40 mm in diameter and all cases feature a three-part construction technique. Measuring 12.19 mm in height, the case does not claim to be ultra-thin but it does elegantly slip beneath the cuff of a shirt.

A notable attribute of this watch is that the wearer can make all adjustments using the crown, hence the caseband is free of correctors. No need to use a fiddly stylus to correct the date; the crown is a one-stop shop for all of your adjustment needs.

The crown is onion-shaped, conferring ease of manipulation, but does not gouge the wrist or chafe the skin. To the rear, an exhibition caseback affords sight of the FC-735 in-house calibre. The Frederique Constant Classic Power Reserve Big Date is supplied on a blue alligator strap.
Frederique Constant FC-735 in-house calibre
Since it was founded in 1988, Frederique Constant has produced a plethora of Manufacture calibres. The Classic Power Reserve Big Date is equipped with a new self-winding movement, the FC-735 in-house calibre, the Maison’s 31st Manufacture calibre.
Considering the comparative youth of the brand, it seems remarkable that it has created 31 in-house calibres, a feat that stands testament to the Maison’s extraordinary technical expertise.

Over the years, the Geneva-based firm has democratised several complications that were hitherto out of reach for many watch enthusiasts. Indeed, complications such as flyback chronographs, perpetual calendars, tourbillons, worldtimers and tourbillon perpetual calendars are now within the financial grasp of more horophiles thanks to Frederique Constant and its egalitarian approach to watchmaking. In terms of the Classic Power Reserve Big Date, this timepiece delivers an intoxicating cocktail of complications for a modest sum.
Despite the steel versions of the Classic Power Reserve Big Date being affordable, the movement remains refined and is endowed with some delightful touches. For instance, the mainplate is embellished with perlage, Côtes de Genève adorns the automatic device bridge and blued screws abound.

The index-regulated balance has a frequency of 28,800 vph (4Hz) and the movement features 32 jewels. Assuming the movement is fully wound, it will run autonomously for 50 hours.
Frederique Constant Classic Power Reserve Big Date – closing remarks
The Classic Power Reserve Big Date Manufacture encapsulates all that is wonderful about Frederique Constant. Housed in an attractively executed 40 mm case, it should suit a broad array of wrist sizes. Equipped with the Maison’s 31st Manufacture calibre, the movement is the product of the firm’s impressive in-house expertise. And, priced at £4,495 (RRP as of 19.2.2024), the cost of the Classic Power Reserve Big Date Manufacture won’t break the bank.
But, I have to return to the dial design. Frederique Constant has shown much intelligence with the design of this model’s display. The hands and indexes are intentionally simple, conversing with the wearer in a clear tone. Nothing inhibits understanding. The dial features three additional complications which could have potentially cluttered the display. Thankfully, Frederique Constant has given much consideration to the shape, the colours employed and the scale of each of these functions, granting ease of interpretation while sidestepping gauche or outré styling. The resultant dial is highly legible and the watch looks handsome both to those individuals blessed with 20/20 vision as well as those more accustomed to viewing the world through a set of bifocals.
