Glashütte Original SeaQ bi-colour Watch Review (2021)
The Glashütte Original SeaQ bi-colour can trace its origins to the Spezimatic Type RP TS200, a divers’ watch first released in 1969 and made by GUB, a state-owned watch company belonging to the DDR. However, this modern-day watch shuns its utilitarian past, favouring high-quality materials and wholeheartedly embracing luxury. Moreover, its scale and various other attributes should prove very tempting to both male and female wearers.
Glashütte Original
In recent months I have worn several watches from Glashütte Original, the high-end marque from Saxony. Every example I have worn has been beautifully made, encompassing elegant and formal styling. However, the German brand also offers watches that are decidedly more casual and sporty, intended for subaquatic use.
The SeaQ, a re-interpretation of Spezimatic Type RP TS200, was unveiled in 2019. It has since become a popular member of the German company’s product portfolio, with further dial variants joining the range over the last 12 months.
Spezimatic Type RP TS200
The Spezimatic Type RP TS200, first released in 1969, was a robust divers’ watch intended for both sports and combat use. It was produced by VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe (GUB), a state-owned watch company belonging to the DDR (Deutsche Demokratische Republik). This timepiece was a functional object that was designed to be practical rather than handsome, produced in an era when austerity and authoritarianism were the order of the day.
Despite sharing a strong family likeness to the Spezimatic Type RP TS200, the Glashütte Original SeaQ is a far prettier watch that has crossed over from a utilitarian tool watch to a far more luxurious offering. Indeed, I doubt Erich Honecker would have countenanced the making of such a plush creation.
Glashütte Original SeaQ bi-colour – 39.5 mm steel case
Now, the German Manufactory has unveiled the ‘Glashütte Original SeaQ in bi-colour’. Housed in a modestly sized 39.5 mm steel case, the watch is fitted with a yellow gold bezel, a golden-toned crown, and sports golden luminescent hands and indexes. The tasteful application of golden hues further heightens the overall sense of luxury.

Some of the press images provided by the watch company show a lady wearing the Glashütte Original SeaQ bicolour, suggesting the model has universal appeal. Certainly, I expect there will be many individuals, both male and female, who will appreciate the readability of the model’s dial, its modest case dimensions as well as the superb build quality synonymous with this esteemed brand. Indeed, not only has the SeaQ crossed over into the sphere of luxury, but it has also become highly desirable to a much wider audience.
