Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer 2023 Watch Review
The Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer 2023 is a new addition to the German marque’s product portfolio. First released in 2009, the Senator Chronometer was voted ‘Watch of the Year’ by the readers of Armbanduhren the following year. Since then, the brand has made subtle changes to the model, culminating in this sublime creation endowed with a prepossessing grenage dial. US-based journalist, Meehna Goldsmith imparts the salient points about this latest model to emerge from the German Manufactory.

The history of marine chronometers
I admit it. I don’t have the greatest sense of direction. Even with the best cartography has to offer, I would invariably get lost and have no clue whatsoever where I was. Fortunately, with the advent of GPS, I can be relatively assured I will show up at the correct location.
Now imagine you’re the captain of a ship embarking on a watery journey before the 18th century. You must traverse the gaping ocean void with no landmarks to tell you where you are. It’s just sea and sky as far as the eye can see. Without a sense of location, ships often met their doom, splintered upon rocks or lost at sea. In other cases, they might arrive at a completely different place than the one they were aiming for. Christopher Columbus was a prime example.

To accurately navigate a ship, you need to have two measurements: latitude and longitude. By 1700, sailors could find latitude with a simple sextant that could measure the sun’s distance above the horizon at noon. But latitude proved a much trickier opponent. Since the earth rotates 360 degrees over 24 hours, that means it will turn 15 degrees in an hour, and one degree in 4 minutes. Sailors understood that one degree of longitude equates to about 60 nautical miles when measured at the equator. The crucial missing ingredient was time. Not just an approximate time, but one precise to a few seconds per day. Otherwise, potential disaster.
Clocks and watches had difficulty enough with precision on terra firma. But to construct one that could keep time while on roiling seas with changing air pressure and humidity? That was a complex headscratcher that stumped the most illustrious horologists of the era. In fact, it wasn’t a horologist who presented the first seaworthy clock in 1730, it was a carpenter named John Harrison who amazingly taught himself clockmaking! Without any formal training whatsoever, he built the HM 1, the first timepiece to revolutionise sea travel.
Getting on a ship prior to Harrison’s invention was a potential life or death game of chance. That’s why a chronometer is considered the highest and most valuable achievement in horology. Today, chronometry is equally prized in mechanical timepieces. While a watch with the wrong time is more of an inconvenience than anything else, creating one that can nearly bullseye the absolute time is a source of pride. It’s a way for the brands to showcase their technical skills and it’s one brewed in a rich stew of history.
Glashütte Original making chronometers since 1886
Glashütte Original can claim a place within these hallowed walls, submitting its first chronometer for testing to the German Naval Observatory in Hamburg in 1886. The brand continues this tradition with the Senator Chronometer, introduced in 2009. Over the years, the model has undergone some design changes, including a limited edition in 2020 from which this current version takes some of its design cues.
Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer 2023 – grenage dial
A feast of technical and aesthetic design, the marque’s newest Senator Chronometer is a powerful eye magnet with its silvery-blue dial reminiscent of the sea and its oceanic beginnings. Instead of flat and two-dimensional, the dial gains depth from the subtle matt surface. This treatment is achieved via silver plating by friction (aka a grenage dial). The process involves mixing fine silver powder, salt and water, and hand rubbing it into the surface. The result is an attractive shimmer which is then finished with a galvanic grey coating.
Against this silvery backdrop, applied Roman numeral indices, comprised of gold and coated with a rich blue hue, anchor the hours. Staying on theme, traditional heat-treated, blued hour and minutes hands circle the railroad chapter ring. In addition, the power reserve, located at 12 o’clock, and the recessed small seconds at 6 o’clock, both feature matching blue indicators.
Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer 2023 – Panorama Date
One of Glashütte Original’s signatures is the Panorama Date and it’s on full display at 3 o’clock. The crisp white numerals snap into focus on the blue background. Packing in even more function, a day/night indicator peeks out just below 12 o’clock. It’s easy to see but unobtrusive, one of those small but exquisite details.
Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer 2023 – white gold case
Framing the elegant and highly legible Senator Chronometer dial layout is a beautifully finished 42 mm white gold case that offers its own artistic delights and details. Polished by hand and satin-brushed, it has a knurled edge, concave bezel and brushed finish on the inner flange. The timepiece is accompanied by a dark blue Louisiana alligator leather strap with a white gold fold-over clasp.
Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer 2023 – Calibre 58-08
Glashütte Original nailed the composition from the front, but the movement is equally impressive. Ticking away inside, the manual wind Manufacture Calibre 58-08 keeps the watch accurate between 0 and +5 seconds per day. To gain this rating, each watch is put through the paces by the Thuringian Office of Weights and Measures in a 15-day test run, measured in five positions and varying temperatures.
As befits a chronometer, the Calibre 58-08 is built with a second-stop mechanism, which stops the seconds hand and returns it to zero at 12 o’clock when the crown is pulled out. At full wind, the movement is autonomous for 44 hours and 40 minutes. Here’s the kicker that watch nerds can really geek out on, yours truly included: a minute detent jumps the minute hand precisely from one minute to the next with an audible haptic click, allowing an exact setting of the time.
While the Calibre 58-08 can boast technical mastery, it also dresses up for the occasion. Seen through the sapphire crystal caseback are the characteristic German three-quarter plate and screw-mounted gold chatons. Like all the brand’s watches, the balance cock is hand-engraved, another nice touch especially considering hand flourishes have been mostly left by the wayside for machined finishing.

The newly minted Glashütte Original Senator Chronometer is a stunning piece that’s more than just a pretty face; it also contains technical artistry. Whether by land or sea, the Senator Chronometer offers reliable timing, historical underpinnings and a handsome visage that makes for a winning combination.
