Only Watch

The Only Watch auction is a highly anticipated biennial event that is next scheduled to take place on the 5th of November at the Palexpo in Geneva. Brands offer up unique creations for auction to raise funds for research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD). Over 60 timepieces will go up on the block for enthusiasts to consider. In addition to supporting a good cause, Only Watch offers brands the opportunity to strut their creative stuff. (We talk extensively about the charity in another article relating to an Only Watch creation should you wish to learn more about the charity’s fundraising efforts.)

Perrelet Turbine collection (2009)

For the occasion, Perrelet presents a special one-of-a-kind piece called the Turbine Chrono Only Watch. First launched in 2009, the Turbine collection redefined dial aesthetics. While most dials are a static affair, the addition of the turbine added mesmerising kinetics to marking the time. A slight movement of the wrist sets off a whirling dervish of motion. The Turbine is constructed from 12 black anodised aluminium blades balanced with 5 tungsten counterweights to slow down the mechanism and return it to the original resting position.

Perrelet Turbine Chrono (2013)

In 2013, Perrelet added a chronograph to the family called the Turbine Chrono. It then updated the design with a second edition in 2017. While the majority of chronographs note intervals of time on separate counters, the TC clocks 60 minutes on a central rotating disc composed of sapphire crystal, simplifying the function into one display. Once the chronograph is engaged, which is operated in the traditional fashion with pushers at 2 and 4 o’clock, a central chronograph seconds hand begins its journey round the dial.

Perrelet Turbine Chrono Only Watch – a new colour scheme

For the Turbine Chrono Only Watch, Perrelet came up with a striking new interpretation. The colour blue, one of the official colours of the Only Watch event, highlights the turbine, which alternates with an anthracite grey. Moreover, the central chrono seconds hand, the tachymeter scale on the flange and stitching on the black fabric strap, secured with a folding clasp, continue the blue theme.

Perrelet Turbine Chrono Only Watch – sapphire crystal disc

Since this watch is a chronograph, discerning the elapsed time is key to its practicality. Perrelet punctuates the chronograph disc with red markers at 15-minute intervals, allowing a quick and easy read. Providing even more information, a handy date window resides at 6 o’clock. In other Perrelet chrono models, hour markers circle the dial. The Only Watch edition instead employs bold seconds in white, emphasising the chronograph function. It’s a solid choice that works functionally as well as aesthetically.

Perrelet Turbine Chrono Only Watch – Grade 2 brushed titanium

Although the Perrelet Turbine Chrono Only Watch is a notable 45mm in diameter, it sits lightly on the wrist as its case is made of Grade 2 brushed titanium. The model also includes the familiar characteristics found on regular Turbine models, including a fluted case band, vertical satin-finished triple lugs, a grippy grooved crown and black PVD treatment on the bezel and rectangular pushers.

Perrelet automatic calibre P-361

The Turbine Chrono Only Watch is powered by the mechanical, automatic calibre P-361, which has a 42-hour power reserve. Flip over the timepiece to find even more decorative flourishes through the sapphire case back. The movement features rhodium-plated bridges with circular graining, while the openworked rotor featuring Perrelet’s ‘P’

logo, which floats on ball bearings, also receives rhodium treatment. Additionally, the sapphire crystal has the inscription ‘Unique Piece’ in black, with ‘Only Watch 2023’ in blue. To store the watch, Perrelet provides a blue tactical box, which again references the Only Watch affiliation. Also included is an additional light blue rubber strap and a fastening tool for a no-fuss changing of the look.

Perrelet Turbine Chrono Only Watch – closing thoughts

With the Turbine Chrono Only Watch, Perrelet has come up with a definite winner. The playful, yet shrewd use of colour, as well as the model’s practicality, differentiate it from many of its mainstream rivals. In November, one lucky bidder will take this watch home. However, those who miss out, amidst the frenetic auction room bidding, may wish to consider a ‘regular’ Turbine Chrono model, a watch that sidesteps mediocrity.
