TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph 42 mm France Edition Watch Review

The Swiss marque based in La Chaux-de-Fonds has just unveiled the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph 42 mm France Edition. Capturing the intrepid spirit of seafarers and the untamed power of the ocean, this limited edition chronograph connects the wearer to the brand’s tide-indication watches of the past. This regatta-inspired timepiece features a colour palette reminiscent of nautical charts and vivid regatta flags, yet reverts to simple chronograph functions and a classic, no-frills Carrera case profile.

TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph 42 mm France Edition – introduction

I had the press release for the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph 42 mm France Edition sent over to me while happily engrossed in the preceding matches of the Wimbledon quarterfinals. It was a day of ups and downs, to say the least.

Djokovic powered past some formidable backhand drives from Alex de Minaur and Jannik Sinner secured an unceremonious victory off the back of Dimitrov’s freak pectoral injury and appeared understandably mixed about a walkover to the next round (little did we know!). I must admit, it takes a lot to pull my eyeballs away from the tennis, even on a day with very little drama unfolding on the courts. But the new Carrera commanded my complete attention and I didn’t want to hand it back.

I went back to the press release three or four times within the first hour, trying to pinpoint exactly what it was that I liked so much about this new chronograph. I’ve always had a soft spot for TAG Heuer. My wrist can even look good under a man’s Aquaracer. Diamond-festooned women’s watches aren’t to my taste and the Aquaracer gives me just the right level of masculinity in a watch without looking extreme. Indeed, I’d argue there is nothing more attractive than a woman carrying off a man’s watch and looking good in it. I guess it stems from romantic Hollywood movies, where the girl effortlessly throws on the fella’s shirt the morning after the night before and proceeds to make pancakes. The clever combination of short and steeply downturned lugs, along with a wide bezel that frames the dial, results in surprisingly decent, female-friendly geometrics, even in the 40 mm field. But TAG Heuer is about so much more than the Aquaracer…

The Ultimate Trackside Timer

The Carrera is the watch that tethers the wrist to the golden age of motorsport racing and the brand’s ubiquitous role, both in the paddock and on the wrists of legends. It occupies a special chapter in the brand’s annals, harking back to the deadly but thrilling Carrera Panamericana road race of the 1950s.

The Carrera chronographs of yesteryear were born for racing and conveyed functional purity with their distinctive tension rings bearing 1/5th of a second scales, their well-spaced indices and their beautiful boxed glass fronts. But the lesser-known corners of this collection tell a tale of vibrant chronographs capable of measuring the crucial pre-start sequences of exhilarating yacht races.

TAG Heuer’s Yachting Chrono

TAG Heuer became the official timer for the America’s Cup in 1967 and a year later released a watch inspired by the success of the victorious Intrepid sailing boat. In 2023, the brand relaunched this popular Skipper design in the form of a Carrera watch, paying homage to the 1968 model of the same name – an elusive collectable with a somewhat mythical status among auction house dwellers.

That original Skipper watch transformed the landscape of the Carrera, arming the dial with a fifteen-minute countdown function, subdivided into three five-minute sections. The 2023 release, complete with a sapphire glassbox, emulated its muse with coloured segments for its 15-minute regatta timer in vivid orange and seafoam hues.

The Skipper watch wasn’t the only 1950s maritime chronograph produced by TAG Heuer, however. Models like the Mareograph and the Seafarer – the latter of which was produced exclusively for American outdoor goods retailer, Abercrombie & Fitch – featured a tide indication incorporated into their designs. Recent interpretations of this model, like the TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Seafarer x Hodinkee which launched last year, pay homage to this layout with pinwheel-like sub-counters at 3 and 9 o’clock in alternating blue and silver shades against a black opaline backdrop.

The new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Limited Edition watch takes up a similar vocation. It’s a masterclass in sailor-oriented functionality, fortified by the colours of vintage Heuer chronographs.

TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph 42 mm France Edition – case

Unlike those vintage A&F pieces, measuring 35 mm in diameter, the new Seafarer-inspired Carrera Chronograph boasts significantly larger dimensions. The stainless steel case measures 42 mm in diameter and 14.3 mm in thickness. The case, topped and backed with a sapphire crystal, is devoid of any tachymeter scale on the bezel, achieving a sense of elegance through its polished top surface. Other architectural elements, however, such as the piston-style push-pieces, the angular lugs and the large crown, are true to the design language of the classic Carrera. The case can also fathom underwater depths of 100 metres and features a shield-engraved logo denoting the brand’s famous emblem.

Master designers at TAG Heuer have opted out of the tide indicator function this time, although the sub-counters still feature a similar decoration. Vibrant shades of yellow and light turquoise-blue conjure images of vivid yacht flags dancing under cerulean skies and call to mind the vintage regatta timers of yesteryear with exactitude.

An inky blue opaline backdrop, as rich as the ocean’s floor, provides a silky-smooth canvas for the 30-minute and 12-hour sub-counters, arranged in a bi-compax layout at 3 and 9 o’clock, and is tastefully framed by a white flange with triangular-shaped hour markers. This latter detail is a faithful nod to the vintage Seafarers of TAG’s past, while the central sections of the sub-counters entice with their intricate snailed interiors. The yellow central chronograph seconds hand charts the dial with a kinetic grace, complementing the blue quarters beautifully. More importantly, however, it serves as a nexus for the other chronograph hands, seamlessly tying all the stopwatch features together.

TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph 42 mm France Edition – the movement

Under the hood of the new TAG Heuer Carrera Chronograph Limited Edition watch is the TH20-00 Calibre. Equipped with 33 jewels and an 80-hour power reserve, this column wheel chronograph is an upgraded version of the Heuer 02 movement. It puts its shield-shaped bidirectional winding rotor on display through a limited-edition engraved exhibition caseback, complete with bridges that parade intricate Geneva stripes for decoration.

Closing remarks

It eventually dawned on me. The vivid colours of vintage Heuer chronographs and the purpose they served in maximising legibility for critical sailing functions (namely regatta timing and tide indication) are what made them the absolute darlings of the 1950s. This is where my affection for the new release emanates from. While Jack Heuer’s original Carrera design is a racetrack legend, models like this shine the spotlight on a lesser-known chapter of the brand’s heritage. Still, they do it using an inspiring command of colour. The new limited edition chronograph is a reminder of the multifaceted history of the Carrera, a role the watch has mastered not only in the paddock but also upon the water.
