Tourbillon Watches

The concept of tourbillon watches was conceived by the British watchmaker and inventor, John Arnold, but was developed by his friend, the Swiss-French watchmaker, Abraham-Louis Breguet, in 1795 and patented by Breguet in 1801.

Tourbillon watches contain a mechanism designed to improve the accuracy of the timepiece by counteracting the Earth’s gravity, allowing the watch to perform regardless of its orientation. This is achieved through a regulation of the energy transfer between the ‘regulating organ’s of the watch, i.e. the balance, balance spring and escapement, via a 360-degree rotating cage that contains the three elements.
