The concept behind this complication was credited to independent Swiss watchmaker, Louis Cottier in 1931. Although, it was in fact his father, Emmanuel Cottier, who came up with the original idea in 1885. This occurred after the chief engineer of the Canadian Railway, who was having to change his watch constantly when travelling between towns and cities, approached Emmanuel to ask him for a solution.
