Urwerk UR-150 Blue Scorpion Watch Review

The Urwerk UR-150 Blue Scorpion was inspired by the predatory arachnid famous for delivering a venomous strike in the blink of an eye. Following the success of the inaugural versions of UR-150 Scorpion, unveiled in 2024, this latest model is executed in an eye-catching shade of blue. The dial of this watch is a miniature arena of tension, motion and mechanical violence. Nina Scally explores the specification of this remarkable expression of neoteric Haute Horlogerie.

Urwerk has an impressive back catalogue, creating watches that challenge traditional notions of time-telling. On this occasion, time is conveyed using satellite hours, framed by an openworked minute hand. Both indications, employing fascinating mechanisms, change with notable alacrity. Indeed, 1/100th of a second is all it takes for the minute hand to flick back 240° to its point of origin, a motion that echoes the lightning-fast stinging strike of its namesake.

The UR-150 Blue Scorpion has a diameter of 42.50 mm with a thickness of 14.80 mm. It boasts an arched profile that is accentuated by a domed sapphire top; characteristics that become very apparent when viewing the watch side-on.

Compared with other Urwerk creations, the UR-150 Blue Scorpion is much smoother and its form is more organic. It features grippy, ridged edges on the sides of the case and concentric circles adjacent to the dial, along with a partially recessed, screw-down crown nestling on the upper edge of the housing.

The sculpted metal case gives a subtle hint of industrialism and rebels against the standard rules of horology. Mirroring the armoured carapace of its namesake, it sits between two extremes. On one hand, it emulates the arachnid’s aggressive stance, while on the other hand, it is endowed with gentle curves and softness. The watch eschews a bezel, further contributing to its futuristic appearance.

The UR-150 Scorpion was unveiled in 2024 in a choice of two executions. The UR-150 Scorpion Titan is housed in titanium and steel (with green dial accents), while the second model, the UR-150 Scorpion Dark, is presented in a stealthy PVD-treated titanium and steel case (with red dial detail). The new UR-150 Blue Scorpion, as its name implies, is dressed in a suit of cerulean clothes with yellow and green tones punctuating the dialscape.

Both the hour and minute indications deliver a hypnotic spectacle, helped along by vibrant doses of colour. Far from traditional, the yellow-tipped hour hand has a dual purpose, pointing to the minutes while simultaneously revealing the hour numeral beneath. A carousel featuring three arms, each carrying a satellite marked with the hour values, performs a choreographed dance lasting no more than a 1/100th of a second.

While all looks calm for 59 minutes of the hour as the Scorpion waits patiently in the dark, the last minute unlocks a hypnotic procession of machinery within the dial. The retrograde hand flips back to ‘0’ like a bolt of lightning while a new hour value comes into view. A sense of calm returns to the dial as the minute hand begins a new journey, once again travelling along the 240° arcing track.

Urwerk UR-150 Blue Scorpion – Calibre UR-50.01

The Urwerk UR-150 Blue Scorpion is fitted with the self-winding Calibre UR-50.01 which features a complex mechanism that drives the satellite carousel and the minute hand. To manage the extreme force and speed of the retrograde minute hand, Urwerk uses a cam and rack system, typically employed on chronographs. In the brand’s words, ‘this mechanism serves a triple function: to mark out the entire path travelled by the retrograde hand; to generate and synchronise the various jumps performed by the different elements; as well as to multiply the influx of energy that will enable the satellites to rotate.’

Fitted to the flywheel is a speed-regulating governor, managing the inertia and kinetic energy expelled by the return of the hand. To the rear of the watch, a pane of sapphire grants a view of the oscillating mass, along with the twin turbine system that regulates the speed of the rotor. The movement is attractively decorated with circular gaining, shot-blasting, sandblasting, satin finishes and chamfered screws. The balance operates at a frequency of 28,800 vph (4 Hz) and the Calibre UR-50.01 has a power reserve of 43 hours.

Closing remarks

Despite its complexity, the Urwerk UR-150 Blue Scorpion remains one of the most compact designs in the brand’s range and proves highly wearable. Seamlessly binding together the strong dome shape of its crystal top and curving lugs, the hand and satellites follow the same sloping profile, imbuing the dial with excellent readability. Indeed, when the Scorpion stings, it leaves not a venomous bite, but a powerful and permanent impression of horological brilliance, with a design as ‘fierce’ as its name.
