Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Moon Phase Retrograde Date Watch Review
To coincide with its 270th anniversary, Vacheron Constantin has created a Patrimony Moon Phase Retrograde Date with a silver-toned dial ‘inspired by the Maltese cross’, the brand’s emblem. Its self-winding movement, the Calibre 2460 R31L/270 is adorned with an unusual ‘côte unique’ finish. Offered in a choice of 18K white gold or 18K rose gold, each reference is limited to 270 pieces. Meehna Goldsmith surveys every facet of this exquisite timepiece and shares her thoughts in her signature style.
Vacheron Constantin – excellence, expressed in hushed tones
In the horological world, brands usually celebrate anniversaries by lighting flares, trumpeting in the town square and showering confetti from the rafters – metaphorically speaking, of course. They favour spectacle over restraint, introducing new models by framing them in terms of a ‘wow’ factor. Not so with Vacheron Constantin, a Maison that instead presents its new accomplishments with a whisper that connoisseurs lean in to hear.
Vacheron Constantin – retrograde date
To mark its 270th anniversary, Vacheron Constantin has unveiled eight limited editions in the Patrimony and Traditionnelle lines, including the Patrimony Moon Phase Retrograde Date. One of my favourites. No question, the Patrimony Moon Phase Retrograde Date will garner appreciative glances with its keen aesthetic. It draws inspiration from the 1950s with its clean lines, balanced proportions and favouring of minimalist shapes, a study of form following function with grace rather than utilitarian design. You can see the expression in the domed dial, slender, applied hour markers and the blued 18K gold retrograde date hand that adds whimsical animation as it glides back to the beginning of each month. This isn’t the first time Vacheron Constantin has put a retrograde indication on its dance card. The complication has been a speciality of the brand since the 18th century.

If you stop at a glance, you’ll miss the magic of the Patrimony Moon Phase Retrograde Date revealed in the details. The silver-toned dial features a subtle geometric motif with a convex external zone that references the Maltese cross, Vacheron Constantin’s marque since 1880. More than just an elegant decoration, the Maltese cross played an important role in 19th-century pocket watches. It was a part that prevented overwinding, protecting the mainspring from excessive torque, which could damage it. While not employed by the Manufacture for this function any longer, it remains a touchstone in its visual vocabulary. However, the image of the Maltese cross does perform a function in the gold pin buckle in the shape of half of a Maltese cross that secures the green alligator strap with square scales and tone-on-tone stitching to the wrist.
Vacheron Constantin – moon phase
Now to the namesake of the piece, the moon phase. In an aperture residing at six o’clock, this complication shows the moon as it crosses the sky, waxing and waning from 0 to 29.5 days. The moon’s disc is made of gold, glowing against a blue, star-studded sky. Sticklers for precision, Vacheron Constantin constructed the astronomic cycle to be accurate within a day for 122 years. Its placement on the dial also provides balance to the overall composition.
Vacheron Constantin Calibre 2460 R31L/270
Don’t wander away before turning over the 18K gold 42.5 mm case. The self-winding Calibre 2460 R31L/270 with a 40-hour power reserve also gets to dress up. The Maison has applied a special Côte unique finish to the bridges and perlage to the mainplate on this limited edition. The Côte unique resembles a grained finish and was rediscovered by the brand in its archives, adorning the movement of an American 1921 model, released in that same year. This Côte unique finish hasn’t graced a Vacheron Constantin movement for over 100 years, until now. The artisans applying this decoration had to relearn the technique, expending 500 hours to perfect it. Even the oscillating weight gets the artistic treatment. Openworked, 22K gold and incorporating the symbol of the Maltese cross, these thoughtful details add visual interest and also perpetuate the brand’s design language. Also, while you’re here, make sure to notice the 270th anniversary emblem commemorating the occasion.

The Calibre 2460 R31L/270 also bears the prestigious Geneva Hallmark (Poinçon de Genève), which is overseen by TimeLab, an independent organisation that monitors the requirements by conducting monthly audits. To receive certification, the movement must be made in Geneva, have hand finishing and be assembled to meet high technical standards. Each step of the process must be detailed in reports submitted to TimeLab. The Hallmark represents artistry married to mechanical excellence. It’s another example of how Vacheron Constantin goes above and beyond, imbuing its timepieces with peerless quality.
Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Moon Phase Retrograde Date – closing remarks
The Vacheron Constantin Patrimony Moon Phase Retrograde Date, limited to 270 pieces, is offered in a choice of two case materials, 18K white gold or 18K 5N pink gold. Rather than announcing itself with a three-volley salute, this anniversary rendition offers a breadth of details waiting to be discovered, proving the loudest in the room aren’t always the most compelling. Vacheron Constantin understands that the best surprises can sneak up on you quietly, delivering the most impact.
