Chopard L.U.C Qualité Fleurier 20th Anniversary Edition Watch Review

The Chopard L.U.C Qualité Fleurier 20th Anniversary Edition is a limited edition model that unites 1950s-inspired design, an ethical 18-carat yellow gold case and a micro-rotor powered movement, all executed to an exalted standard. Nina Scally discusses the eponymous ‘Haute Horlogerie Quality Certification’ and explores the specification of the model in detail.

Chopard L.U.C – watchmaking excellence

On hearing the name Chopard, you may well think of fine jewellery or Happy Sport watches featuring perpetually dancing, free-spirited diamonds. However, the brand’s product portfolio is far more extensive and varied than that. It includes Mille Miglia, Alpine Eagle and L’Heure Du Diamant references before reaching a crescendo with ‘L.U.C’. For legions of watch aficionados, those three letters succinctly signify excellence and represent the pinnacle of Chopard watchmaking. From simple two-handers to ultra-complex minute repeaters, the L.U.C collection offers a tempting array of potential ownership options.

Chopard Manufacture depuis 1996

In 1996, the family-owned firm established Chopard Manufacture in Fleurier and one year later unveiled the L.U.C 1860 equipped with the L.U.C 96.01-L movement. The name L.U.C pays tribute to the founder of the Maison, Louis-Ulysse Chopard. The inaugural movement demonstrated Chopard’s technical expertise. Equipped with a micro-rotor, L.U.C Twin technology (twin barrels), a Philips terminal curve and blessed with superb finishing, the L.U.C 96.01-L movement proved sublime in every way. Chopard sought to back this up with independent certification. The watch was chronometer certified (COSC) and marked with the Poinçon de Genève.

Fleurier Quality Foundation was founded in 2001

Since releasing its first L.U.C model in 1997, Chopard has been the recipient of numerous coveted GPHG prizes. However, the Maison has never rested on its laurels, repeatedly subjecting its watches to the scrutiny of third parties. Indeed, in 2001, Chopard, along with Bovet, Parmigiani Fleurier and Vaucher established the Fleurier Quality Foundation. This initiative was also supported by the ‘local authorities, including the canton of Neuchâtel, the municipality of Fleurier, the regional association of Val-de-Travers and the federal government (SECO)’.

The objectives were to ensure that a watch bearing the Qualité Fleurier (QF) hallmark was ‘100% manufactured in Switzerland’, delivered ‘reliable precision in all circumstances’, possessed ‘proven durability’ and was endowed with an ‘exclusive aesthetic quality of finish’.

To meet the onerous requirements of the Fleurier Quality Foundation is no mean feat. Indeed, in 2024, Chopard released the aptly named L.U.C Qualité Fleurier in Lucent Steel, a model reviewed by ESCAPEMENT at the time. In this article, the stringent criteria for certification, including the exhaustive tests, are discussed at length.

Commemorating the 20th anniversary of the first L.U.C Qualité Fleurier

This year, to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the first L.U.C Qualité Fleurier, Chopard has unveiled a new, limited-edition high-end model. The Chopard L.U.C Qualité Fleurier 20th Anniversary Edition, appropriately limited to just 20 pieces, shares much in common with last year’s Lucent steel model but, courtesy of its warm yellow gold case and gilded dial, it exudes a vintage vibe, a point I will return to shortly.

Over the years, Chopard has unveiled new models with due consideration to what has gone before. This has ensured that existing clients are not left with a watch that looks passé. While I’ve already made reference to the L.U.C Qualité Fleurier in Lucent Steel released in 2024, the design also shares much in common with the first L.U.C Qualité Fleurier released in 2005 and even the L.U.C QF Jubilee (launched in 2021). Indeed, all of these references, inspired by the past, have never lost their eye-appeal, remaining untouched by changing fashions.

Chopard L.U.C Qualité Fleurier 20th Anniversary Edition – dial

Chopard’s new L.U.C Qualité Fleurier 20th Anniversary Edition watch features a sumptuous two-tone sector dial, executed in indulgent gold and chocolate tones. The surface of the dial is enriched with sunburst satin finishes at the centre and fringed by a circular brushed hour track. The small seconds dial at 6 o’clock is snailed, while the syringe-shaped hour and minute hands sit at ease with the dart-shaped faceted hour markers. Small pearls of Super-LumiNova are positioned adjacent to each index, save for the cardinal points where lume is liberally applied across the face of each hour marker.

Chopard L.U.C Qualité Fleurier 20th Anniversary Edition – case

Similar to the brand’s Lucent Steel version released in 2024, the new L.U.C Qualité Fleurier watch measures a very wearable 39 mm in diameter. The welded lugs uphold fine watchmaking practice, seamlessly joined to the case and positioned for optimal ergonomics. Moreover, their distinctive sculpted design, difficult to achieve with CNC machining, delivers a notable quotient of elegance. An ethical 18-carat yellow gold case boasts polished finishes on the caseback and bezel, while the flanks of the case are vertically satin-brushed. This juxtaposition of two contrasting finishes serves to heighten the overall sense of refinement. Measuring 8.92 mm in thickness, the watch is sufficiently svelte to slip under the cuff of a shirt.

Chopard L.U.C Calibre 96-09-L

The Calibre 96-09-L – a descendant of the 96-01-L movement – has been executed to an exquisite level. It is a micro-engineering marvel with its remarkably slender anatomy and cluster of refinements. Indeed, wherever your eyes come to rest on this movement, you are reminded of being in the presence of something exemplary.

Chopard has amassed years of technical expertise and is one of the few Maisons that has mastered micro-rotor powered movements. Creating sufficient inertia to energise a mainspring (there are two in this instance) is difficult; however, Chopard surmounted such issues from the get-go when it created the inaugural 96-01-L movement back in 1996. The benefits of a micro-rotor are that it affords the wearer an unhindered view of the movement and because it sits flush with neighbouring bridges, rather than above them, it also mitigates overall thickness. Indeed, the Calibre 96-09-L has a depth of just 3.30 mm. The movement also features Chopard’s patented Twin technology, comprising two stacked barrels that deliver a power reserve of 65 hours.

Supreme finishes are in abundance throughout this movement. The mainplate is decorated with perlage, the bridges are adorned with Côtes de Genève and sport gleaming bevels and even the screws are mirror-polished to perfection. Everything is revealed by an exhibition caseback for the delight of inquisitive types.

Completing the subtle vintage-esque look, the watch is presented on a soft brown calfskin leather strap with beige contrast stitching and an 18-carat ethical yellow gold pin buckle engraved with the Chopard logo.

Closing remarks

The Chopard L.U.C Qualité Fleurier 20th Anniversary Edition has a period-themed sector dial with clean and straightforward hands and indexes that deliver the essential elements of timekeeping succinctly. While it is both perpetually alluring and technically impressive, there is a significant level of detail beneath the epidermis.

Chopard L.U.C Qualité Fleurier 20th Anniversary Edition

Perhaps there lies the magic of this watch. The absence of space-age materials and superfluous complications will appeal to those purists who prefer their timepieces to convey minimalism. Unbeknownst to many, however, the very highest ideals of Swiss watchmaking are adhered to within the case. The Qualité Fleurier seal is the ultimate arbiter of a watch’s intrinsic worth and a hallmark of comprehensive excellence rarely encountered elsewhere. Chopard’s decision to subject its products to the scrutiny of Qualité Fleurier (QF) and COSC should be applauded and the Chopard L.U.C Qualité Fleurier 20th Anniversary Edition should be respected as a wonderful exemplar of Haute Horlogerie.
