The Grand Seiko Genbi Valley Hi-Beat SLGH035 is a new addition to the Evolution 9 collection. The dial, inspired by the flowing river that winds through the Genbi Valley, is presented in a captivating shade of turquoise blue and enriched with an intricately textured surface. Equipped with the sophisticated, high-frequency Calibre 9SA5, the watch is also fitted with a new, updated bracelet incorporating a micro-adjustment system that provides a perfect fit.

Genbi Valley

The Genbi Valley, located in the Iwate Prefecture, has been carved over millennia by the fast-flowing Iwai River. This 2 km gorge forms a dramatic scene where rugged rock formations, cascading waterfalls and lush, overhanging flora entice visitors from around the globe to discover its charms. It also provides a constant source of inspiration for the master craftspeople at the Grand Seiko Studio Shizukuishi, who witness nature through the atelier’s windows.

In early 2024, the Japanese marque presented the SLGH021G, a model that captured the splendour of this location. Limited to just 1,000 pieces, it had a richly textured, light-green dial inspired by the lush vegetation clinging tenaciously to the gorge’s rocky banks. Housed in an Ever-Brilliant steel case and powered by the Calibre 9SA5, this original Genbi Valley model will undoubtedly have left a lasting impression on those fortunate enough to have seen it.

Now, the Japanese brand, once again inspired by the nation’s topography, releases a further Genbi Valley model, the Grand Seiko Genbi Valley Hi-Beat SLGH03. While its predecessor looked to the flora bordering the river, this latest creation, which joins the permanent Evolution 9 collection, focuses on the water itself. The model retains the same rugged, terrain-inspired dial texture, but in this instance it’s presented in a light blue hue, a shade that mimics the clear, rushing waters of the Iwai River in early summer.

The Evolution 9 collection was introduced in 2020, coinciding with Grand Seiko’s 60th anniversary. While it respected the heritage of the legendary 44GS of 1967, the original design language was refined to include a series of subtle improvements. Collectively, these changes enhance beauty, legibility and wearer comfort. Like the aforementioned limited-edition SLGH021G, this latest Genbi Valley model, the SLGH035, adopts the same improvements. Presented in Ever-Brilliant steel, it measures 40 mm in diameter and 11.7 mm in thickness, dimensions and proportions that should suit most wrist sizes.

Within the watch industry, the two most common grades of stainless steel used are 316L and 904L. Ever-Brilliant Steel, by contrast, is a proprietary alloy boasting a PREN (Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number) value of ‘over 40’, surpassing 316L (circa 25) and 904L (circa 35). Put simply, the higher the PREN value, the greater the corrosion resistance. Furthermore, from a purely aesthetic standpoint, Ever-Brilliant Steel exhibits a lustrous, silvery-white hue that is visibly brighter than standard steel, heightening the perception of luxury.

Drawing on Grand Seiko’s artisanal expertise, the company’s skilled craftspeople have enhanced the appearance of the case and bracelet with the firm’s signature Zaratsu polishing technique. The flat upper surfaces and gracefully contoured flanks are imbued with a delicate hairline brush, serving as the perfect foil for the broad, bevelled edges which gleam with a distortion-free, mirror-like brilliance – a hallmark of this highly skilled artisanal technique. Each facet and finish is designed to yield contrasting areas of light and shadow.

Grand Seiko’s mastery of dial creation is renowned. The brand frequently employs complex hues and textures that compel legions of horophiles to visit its boutiques, eager to view these miniature canvases in the metal. The dial sits beneath a box-shaped sapphire crystal, drinking in light, thereby aiding readability. The turquoise blue surface of the SLGH035 Genbi Valley’s dial lures the eye towards its pressed pattern. Deeply textured and gloriously irregular, the dial’s epidermis plays with light, evoking thoughts of flowing waters traversing rocky terrain.

Consistent with the Evolution 9 style, the hour and minute hands are beautifully faceted, boosting legibility. Every small detail is designed to augment beauty. For example, the hour hand features a truncated tip and a recessed line runs along its surface. The hour markers are similarly complex, with deep grooves at their centres that elicit light and shadow. A date display resides at 3 o’clock, while a central seconds hand sweeps gracefully across the texture-rich surface.

The high-beat Calibre 9SA5 sits beneath a see-through caseback. First introduced in 2020, this automatic movement has a cadence of 5 Hz (36,000 vph) in a market where 3 Hz and 4 Hz are the norm. A significant benefit of using a high-frequency movement is that if the balance is subjected to a shock, it will recover its rate more quickly, aiding precision.

The challenges with high-beat movements are that they have a tendency to quaff lubricants, consume more energy, often resulting in a limited power reserve, and can suffer from accelerated wear. The Calibre 9SA5 addresses these issues in several ways. Firstly, it is equipped with a dual impulse escapement, which, unlike a traditional Swiss lever escapement, delivers an indirect impulse to the balance in one direction and a direct impulse in the other. A significant benefit of the dual impulse escapement is that it consumes less energy and, on this occasion when coupled with twin barrels, delivers an impressive power reserve of 80 hours.

MEMS technology is a further reason why the Calibre 9SA5 consumes less energy and is less prone to wear. MEMS technology is a lithographic method of ‘growing’ intricately shaped parts to infinitesimal tolerances. Both the escape wheel and pallet lever are made using this method. The resultant surfaces prove remarkably smooth, mitigating friction, thereby reducing wear and energy consumption. Grand Seiko has also openworked these components, reducing mass, further mitigating energy consumption. Lastly, the geometry of the escape wheel has been optimised and includes small reservoirs at the end of each tooth to help retain lubricants, once again reducing wear and energy consumption.

Most watches are fitted with an index-regulated balance where the effective length of the balance spring is adjusted to alter the rate of the movement. However, Grand Seiko has equipped this movement with a technically superior free-sprung balance. With this latter regulation system, the effective length of the balance spring is fixed and the rate is altered by adjusting inertia weights fitted to the rim of the balance wheel. A free-sprung balance can be set more precisely, will confer superior precision and should the watch be subjected to a shock, it is less likely to require remedial regulation.

Another enhancement found on this watch is that the balance spring is endowed with an ‘overcoil’. This term refers to raising the outer coil of the balance spring and curving it to a precise shape, causing the balance spring to breathe more concentrically, aiding isochronism. In 2020, when Grand Seiko unveiled the Calibre 9SA5, the brand stated that it had arrived at the specific shape of the overcoil ‘after more than 80,000 simulations with the result that its performance is optimised in every possible position’.

The architecture of the Calibre 9SA5 was inspired by the shape of Mt. Iwate and a bend in the nearby Shizukuishi River that runs near the studio where the watch is made. Its gracefully curved bridges are adorned with a striped motif, while the mainplate is embellished with perlage and blued screws.

When Grand Seiko introduced the Evolution 9 collection, it demonstrated its unwavering pursuit of continuous improvement. Now, the Ever-Brilliant steel bracelet is slimmer and endowed with a far more pronounced taper from the 22 mm lug width down to the clasp, making the watch sit better on the wrist. Additionally, the three-fold clasp now incorporates a micro-adjustment system. Using the push-button release, the wearer can fine-tune the wrist fit in three increments, 2 mm each (6 mm in total).

Closing Thoughts

Grand Seiko’s Evolution 9 watches exemplify Japanese perfectionism. They demand the wearer to pause and consider every Zaratsu-polished facet and this watch proves no exception. But while the limited edition SLGH021G captured the appearance of the river’s quiet, moss-draped banks, the SLGH035’s effervescent light-blue dial reproduces the dynamic rush of the water itself. With its impeccable GS movement and new micro-adjustable bracelet, this elegant timepiece proves horological supremacy doesn’t necessarily require a European postcode.
