Laurent Ferrier Classic Auto Horizon Watch Review
The Laurent Ferrier Classic Auto Horizon demonstrates the Swiss marque’s remarkable sensitivity to line, shape, colour, tone, form and texture. Beyond its prepossessing appearance, the watch is equipped with the LF 270.01 self-winding movement, featuring a platinum micro-rotor and finished to an ultra-refined standard. US-based Meehna Goldsmith shares her observations.
Laurent Ferrier – GPHG success in its first year (2010)
I love a good Cinderella story and Laurent Ferrier’s horological journey reads like one of the best in class. Except Ferrier traded glass slippers for bespoke leather loafers. At the age of 60, most watchmakers are looking to hang up their loupe. Instead, Ferrier retired after 37 years at Patek Philippe as Head of the Product Development department, to establish his eponymous brand. In 2010, he debuted his first watch, the Galet Classic Tourbillon Double Spiral. Adding even more of a fairy godmother touch, this watch won the Best Men’s Watch prize at the Grand Prix de d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG) in 2010.
Laurent Ferrier Classic Auto Sandstone
Fifteen years later, the Laurent Ferrier brand continues to shine and impress, proving that age and ambition can provide the best transformations. Take, for example, the Classic Auto Sandstone, unveiled at Geneva Watch Days 2024. Due to its popularity, what began as a Série Atelier experiment limited to 20 pieces, all of which were sold, now returns in a new colourway as a permanent member of the collection, bearing the name ‘Classic Auto Horizon’.

Laurent Ferrier Classic Auto Horizon – Watches & Wonders 2025
Every watch in the Laurent Ferrier collection follows a precise and elegant logic. First came the Classic pillar, followed by the Square, which were both in the traditional vein. Then the brand ventured into the sport category with the complicated Grand Sport models, which could be categorised as elegant sports watches. The Sport pillar expanded into the simpler displays of the Sport models, which incorporated automatic movements. The Classic Auto is a nice evolution, taking the Sport line’s automatic micro-rotor movement, the LF270.01, and applying it to the Classic collection’s design language. The result is a versatile dress watch in contrast to an elegant sports watch.

Unveiled at Watches & Wonders 2025, the Classic Auto Horizon’s name embodies Laurent Ferrier’s philosophy: new beginnings. To create the engaging hue of the dial, a fine layer of translucent blue lacquer is applied to a base treated with a silver galvanic coating. The result directly reflects the horizon that Laurent Ferrier himself loves to contemplate and gaze upon. Inspired by nature, Ferrier finds this vista a place to let his mind wander into dreamy possibilities. When viewed in the correct light, the dial flickers with a hint of purple, adding intrigue. And that’s a clue to examine further. What looks deceptively simple at first glance holds a treasure trove of details to the discerning eye.

Laurent Ferrier Classic Auto Horizon – dial
The dial comes alive with a play of finishes, vertical satin-brushed in the centre and a circular satin-brushed minute track embracing the dial. Recessed at 6 o’clock and adding depth, the small seconds display snaps into focus with dark blue markers, while the snailed treatment offers a hypnotic background to the white gold, baton-shaped hand.

Elongated teardrop hour markers in white gold spread from the edge of the dial towards the centre, collaborating with the brand’s eye-catching white-gold Assegai-spear hands to indicate the prevailing time.

A date display completes the picture, integrating fluidly into the overall design and echoing Ferrier’s passion for motorsports. The stamped aperture framed in blue resembles the slope of a hood or vent, smoothly directing the eye to the legible, slate grey numerals against a white disc.
Laurent Ferrier Classic Auto Horizon – LF 270.01 calibre
The sapphire crystal caseback reveals the impeccable architecture and finishing of the LF 270.01 calibre, which is a hallmark of the Laurent Ferrier atelier. Notice how the cutout bridges that reveal the balance and centre wheel sit adjacent to rhodium-plated Côtes de Genève decoration.

The off-centre, platinum micro-rotor incorporates a unidirectional ball bearing, helping to counter the effects of impacts and vibration. In addition, the micro-rotor is adorned with a feather-style motif and is embellished with chevrons, indicating its direction of travel. The brand explains the feathers as an accompaniment to the beak shape of the automatic bridge. When fully wound, the calibre delivers a generous 72-hour power reserve.

Showcasing the brand’s many finishing techniques, the LF 270.01 calibre features highly desirable mirror-polishing. Bridges are enriched with anglage, a type of finishing where a 45° chamfer is created between the surface of a bridge and the flanks. This involves removing burrs with a file and softening the angles before ultimately refining the chamfered edge with gentian wood, used in conjunction with diamantine. Lastly, the movement features several internal angles, the most difficult to polish, along with an exquisite combination of satin-brushed and circular-grained finishes.
Laurent Ferrier Classic Auto Horizon – case
Presented in a polished 40 mm stainless steel case, featuring a ball-shaped crown, the Classic Auto Horizon adopts the brand’s signature pebble-shape housing, a look inspired by 19th century pocket watches. The Classic Auto Horizon is accompanied by a hand-stitched taupe goat leather strap with tone-on-tone Alcantara lining and a stainless steel pin buckle.
Closing remarks
This newest addition to the Classic Auto collection reminds us that in the best Cinderella stories, the time approaching midnight isn’t an ending, it’s when new horizons appear.
