Skeleton watches provide an insight into the skilled craftsmanship behind the process of watchmaking by intentionally exposing the workings of the movement, including the bridges, gears and bearings that make the watch’s functions possible. This rather cleverly gives a direct view through the dial to the intricate movements within.
The first skeleton watch was created by French clockmaker, André-Charles Caron, in the 1760s. Patek Philippe later developed pocket watch versions for exhibition and display nearly a century later, in the mid-1800s.
