Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921 Watch Review
While some groundbreaking watch designs quickly appear passé, the unconventional Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921 has retained its youthful appearance for more than a century. Earlier this year, the Geneva-based brand added two new references to its Historiques collection. US-based Meehna Goldsmith returns to 1919 with her take on the legendary model before taking a closer look at these latest iterations of the timepiece.
Avant-garde watches
Avant-garde wasn’t a word usually associated with watches before the 1920s. Most fell into the staid and traditional category. Then in 1919, Vacheron Constantin released a watch distinguished by its dial set at a 45-degree angle. It had Arabic numerals, radium-coated hands, subsidiary seconds at 6 o’clock and the crown on the top left side of the case. An updated version was released in 1921 for the American market, with the crown on the right side, an enamel dial treatment dressed with Arabic painted numerals, along with matching black hands. Many objects deemed progressive in their time, in retrospect, can feel anachronistic; not so, for the Historiques American 1921. Over a hundred years later, its style, like a fine whisky, has matured into a perennial classic.
The American from 1919 – 1921
The Roaring Twenties were a time of experimentation, rethinking norms and, of course, drama. The original models of the American from 1919 and 1921 provided the inspiration for the current Historiques American 1921 collection. Introduced in 2006, the American 1921 collection celebrates Vacheron’s design heritage through modern interpretations of its iconic watches. While mainly known for its traditional design, Vacheron Constantin can also take credit for becoming the precursor to the avant-garde in horology, setting the stage for modern brands such as URWERK and Ressence.
Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921 – two new references for 2026
This year, Vacheron adds two more variations to the Historiques American 1921 models, a 40 mm and a 36.5 mm version, both presented in a cushion case formed of 18K 5N pink gold. The models share the same characteristics, it’s only their size that differs.
Now seems a good time to address the pervasive story of the original American as a driver’s watch. While the watch does suit well to reading the time when your hands are on the wheel, it was never envisioned for this purpose – though it certainly takes on the job with aplomb. If you still have doubts, Christian Selmoni, Director of Heritage and Style at Vacheron, acknowledges that there isn’t any reference in the archives to this enduring mythology. Nonetheless, somehow, the American watches seem born to the task.
Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921 – dial
The new Historiques American 1921 models are just stunning, with the type of detail that elevates through restraint. The grained silver-tone dial has to be observed up close to be appreciated. I love a frosted finish on a movement and it works beautifully here on the front of the dial, which is complemented by bright blue Arabic numerals and 18K gold blued open-tipped hour and minutes hands.

The Arabic numerals have an inviting and playful posture that’s approachable, while also having enough poise and confidence to be taken seriously. A circular satin finish rounds the dial periphery, while snailing decorates the small seconds counter. The different treatments add tension and offer another thoughtful detail to explore.
The 45-degree rotation of the dial contrasts with the small seconds indication, which aligns perpendicularly at 3 o’clock. This juxtaposition allows for a quick read of the seconds. It also lets you know with a wink that there’s something different about this composition.
Vacheron Constantin Historiques American 1921 – case
While the cushion shape of the case is familiar, this one is distinctive and can be identified from several paces away. Positioned at 1 o’clock on the case sits the crown, another identifying feature. Yet again we see the unorthodox placement: though the crown sits at 1 o’clock, the Arabic numeral 12 is directly centered underneath due to the 45-degree rotation of the dial. The Historiques American is presented on a patinated dark blue calfskin leather strap with a gradient effect and is paired with an 18K gold pin buckle.

Vacheron Constantin Calibre 4400 AS
Powering the Historique American 1921 is the manual-wind Calibre 4400 AS, seen through the exhibition case back. Developed and manufactured by the Maison, it has a hearty 65-hour power reserve to get you through the weekend and most of Monday. For those, like me, who appreciate fine finishing, the Calibre 4400 earns the Geneva Hallmark with all the finishing of parts and technical expertise that requires.
Closing remarks
The Historiques American 1921 is a compelling marriage of historic design and modern Haute Horlogerie. Some watches demand attention through sheer spectacle, while others make their mark more subtly. With its unconventional composition, playful character and refined execution, the American 1921 proves that a little drama, when handled with restraint, can leave an impression that lasts more than a century.
